Would you support HRC if she ran as an indy?

(47,953 posts)HRC supporters have a history. Right now you all are confident of winning. Should that change, I fully expect a repeat of 2008.

(24,692 posts)He is a committed Democratic Socialist. He knows that running as an independent would ensure at least 4 years of the exact opposite of Democratic Socialism. He is in the Democratic presidential primary to win, but also to inform Americans about the real causes and proven solutions to the rising inequality in our country. I am convinced that he does not want his legacy to be having made that inequality worse with the election of a President Trump or Cruz or whichever republican emerges.

(24,692 posts)He knows he can get elected in Vermont as an Independent senator. He also knows he cannot get elected as an Independent president and that going Third Party would lead to a President Trump or Cruz - something that running as an Independent senator in Vermont does not threaten.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)It is a very different situation, and I definitely do not believe he would run third party in this case if he does not get the Democratic Party nomination. But one of his claims to fame is his independence from the two-party system and his ability to be successful without being a member of one of the two major parties.

(45,319 posts)The better term for Bernie's long time status is non-partisan, of no Party. In the US, there is an Independent Party, being in that Party means you are not an independent and Bernie is not a member of that party nor was he, he was of no Party affiliation, caucused with Democrats exclusively.
To draw a very clear picture, Bernie has endorsed and or campaigned for Democratic Presidential nominees with full consistency while some even among his supporters have not done so, while some who are now with Hillary have not done so, while some of my associates have voted for an actual Third Party and some on DU did the same. Bernie voted for Al Gore. He also voted for Bill Clinton, and even Elizabeth Warren was still voting for Bush back then.
To be Third Party, there has to be a Party.

(6,324 posts)I am in NC.
NC, like many other states, has a "sore loser" law that says if you are on the primary ballot and don't win you can't be on the ballot for the general election under a different party or as an independent.
So,it would be impossible for me to do so. He couldn't be on the ballot in that circumstance.
Of course anyone who understands how the system works knows that enough states have sore loser laws to make it impossible for someone running after losing primaries to win the Electoral College, and therefore knows that these questions and scenarios are pointless and unrealistic.

That being said, this move, unless the DNC/DWS stops fanning the flames, guarantees a fascist in the White House.

(17,821 posts)Debbie Schlitz who does it, not Bernie Sanders. If she sabotages Bernie's campaign, it will cost the Democrats a lot more than the election of 2016. The Dems will be a minority party for at least a generation if that happens. Somebody had better have a talk with Debbie. I don't understand why a Republican is head of the Democratic Party, anyway.

(3,960 posts)Bernie, Martin, or whoever. But is such a run even possible?
Apparently Pennsylvania has a sore loser law. It may not apply to a Presidential election -- but it is hard to get on the ballot. The Greens have a ballot slot -- but would they nominate him for the asking? It is not 2000 and Bernie is not Nader.
If there is a left third party nominee it will not be Bernie. The real question is, how many Berniacs would vote for Jill Stein or would stay home if Bernie is not the nominee? That's a matter of opinion and my opinion is: very few. Reasons for this have been given in an above post. Here is one more: the political revolution doesn't end with the presidential election. It goes on in a different way. Depending on the election results, this could be even more interesting.
Now, here's another question: would the Constitution party nominate Trump? Would they nominate an establishment candidate to run against Trump? Would either of those steps build their brand?

(43,456 posts)Bernie cares too much for the US to put the country at risk of the nutzoids. He's a good man, not an egomaniac, an idealist but still a realist.
