Trump will be a handful for either Sanders or Clinton.

His total disregard for the truth or for any moderation of rhetoric means he will disavow his out of wack primary statements. He will certainly continue with his over simplified views of every issue but will aim directly at the independent voter who sees the government as the problem rather than the solution. He will be confident of his support from the GOP mainstream and will simply say anything to court the disaffected Democrat and the mildly interested.

What do you think?

Because the GOP establishment hates Cruz just as much. Jeb is at 3% right now. And Rubio isn't much better.

They don't have anyone else that the party will rally behind.

It is actually quite alarming, because that suggests that a sizable portion of to public is or has racist tendencies, and extreme xenophobia

I think you gotta be a nutjob or just not paying attention to life around the country if you fall for some whack B.S. that Trump is spewing.

There will be plenty falling for his whack B.S. All around the country I run into people paying very little attention to the political fight we've been enjoying here on DU for months now.

Americans are so gullible, they'll vote for an imbecile they'd like to drink a beer with.

as the republican base. He will find some support from xenophobes and racists among independents and Democrats but his percentages there will be much lower.

But the media will be eating up Trump as he moves from his wacko primary rhetoric to a more reasonable line. He didn't get to be where he is because of being a nut case and his privileged background will serve him well as he courts the moneyed and influential. Most with a clubby prep school background know how to tow the line and behave in a way the media will find acceptable.
