(16,974 posts)It hurts to let many stand I do not agree with the post or poster, but I do as it is my honor on the line. What annoys me is the number of baseless alerts lately.

(3,076 posts)Is in the eye of the beholder. These are very broad categories, by design as per the people running this site. I for one appreciate the ability to possibly remove posts that offend the cultural norms at DU. There are lots of other sites that people can go to if they want to read offensive or inflammatory.
The ability to remove "disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate" posts maintains DU as a "safe space" of sorts for progressives to discuss the issues of the day in a comfortable environment.

(3,076 posts)While at the same time being civil. But sometimes, opinions or facts make people uncomfortable or are off topic. These types of posts are rightly alerted on and sometimes hidden.

(66,813 posts)It's rather like when a new employee, with minimal familiarity with a company's dynamic, rolls in and starts telling the seasoned employees how things should run.
Sure, the new person might have extensive and relevant experience, but in the context of DU such people usually identify themselves as "long time lurkers," or else they turn out to be reincarnations of the newly departed.
Pointing this out is not bullying. It is a straightforward and reasonable observation presented in a straightforward and reasonable manner.
You could explain what the OP's time on the board has to do with whether or not that is a valid idea or not?? would really like to see that
Thanks

(3,076 posts)It was bullying. You dismissed the validity of the comment because the poster hadn't been "in the club" long enough.

(18,101 posts)It's an invalid whine no matter who is posting it.
As to whether it was humor, or not, is up to members who have been here long enough to get the reference to a former member.

(66,813 posts)Other than DU or The Discussionist, what forums feature a similar jury system? The fact that you claim to "understand discussion forums" is irrelevant.
I look forward to your long years of positive contributions to DU.

(31,464 posts)I very often vote to "leave" stuff I entirely disagree with. No one asked me for my opinion, just whether or not the particular post was, as you stated, "innapropriate..." etc. I've voted to "leave" some very ridiculous stuff. But someone's silly opinion is NOT a reason to hide a post.

(19,091 posts)about what was hidden.
There are a number of terms I always heard in a non-offensive, totally unrelated way to their apparently offensive meaning that I've learned at DU. It's an interesting situation. Some of us have never heard a word in a particular meaning, OR (more often in my case) I had heard it but thought it was neutral rather than offensive, in context I'd heard it. Come to DU, or sometimes other highly diverse groups, and find out that it is indeed offensive.
Just wondering if there was an element of that in your post, or if it really was just a case of "I disagree, so I'm going to hide". (which I don't discount, by the way. Knock on wood, it hasn't happened to me yet, but I expect one day it will.)

(16,922 posts)dems are supposed to be big tent and i envy at times the ability of the old gop to have folks in a coordinated goose step to the democratic herding cats strategy we seem to employ......
that being said we should not be assholes to each other......the gop is so much a target rich environment. i prefer to take my wrath out there.....Some standards MUST be employed

(51,308 posts)I rarely vote to hide. I often serve on juries for a poster I don't particularly like.
I still won't vote to hide unless there is a clear personal attack involved.
I would never vote to hide based on a point of view.

(2,975 posts)And stooped myself from doing it. The first response was "YOUR ASS IS MINE TREBEK", but....then I thought of the bullshit alert swarms driven on personal and ideological beef, and how I loath that kind of judgement. Measure twice, cut once.
Not embarrassed to say I've gone both ways, voting to hide a Berner and leave a Hillionare alone. It's not the person, it's the rules.
