This is a picture of my back yard in Anchorage, Alaska, today. It's 45 and very windy (some places around town have had hurricane force, 90-100 mph). We NEVER would have seen this 30 years ago.

(9,463 posts)...the participants are awed by the inexplicable changes in the climate there as if they have no idea what could be causing it. They mention it often but climate change seems never to occur to them. Funny, that.

(65,616 posts)It amazes me how out of tune some are with mother nature. Oh well, some of us will be more prepared and aware and some will just stand out in the rain and drown.
Hate to be a downer about this, but some have already made their beds and will have to sink with them.

No snow in lower Michigan, either.

(86,804 posts)Also the snowmobile race had a lot of problems. A friend of mine was in the snowmobile race and had a really hard time and said they were breaking through the ice where there were lakes.
I'm up in the coldest part of the Rockies, we have a good amount of snow (4' base) and very high avalanche danger, and double digit subzero temps at night.

(46,436 posts)although they won't determine a route until next month probably. I think there was a pretty good snowpack up north, but it may be disappearing now. Alyeska was looking good for skiing, but I imagine it's too dangerous right now.

(15,480 posts)Early morning Mat-Su outage leaves up to 20K without power
By Josh Edge, APRN - Anchorage | December 30, 2015
As many as 20,000 Matanuska-Susitna residents have been without power this morning due to wind.
Matanuska Electric Association spokesperson Julie Estey says about 15,000 of those outages are due to a downed major transmission line serving the Palmer, Wasilla and Big Lake areas.

Whenever they bring up the subject they get stacks
of nasty letters and emails from the WingNutz. They
don't even talk about it being a "touchy" subject any
more because they know they will hear about it.

This will thaw ground in the Arctic circle and thereby release more methane gas which is tremendously more damaging to the climate then just CO2.
We are destroying ourselves. We do not have the centuries left that some thought. It's most certainly unlikely this can be undone or that we can geoengineer ourselves out of this hell.

On Christmas Day, I was working in the garden...85 degrees.
The grass is greening way too soon.
The buds on our fruit trees are swelling because they think it is Spring. Like last year, I expect a hard freeze next that will kill all of our young fruit.
If this is the New Normal, then we are all fucked.....UNLESS
you let me plant tomatoes and melons in your back yard.
Bad year last year. everything cooked on the vine...few plants actually produced.
I have learned one thing....you can always count on beans.
Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)Not the peas, though. It was too hot. We had several 80+ days here last summer, which used to be unheard of. In fact, we used to have years when the temp would only be above 70 three or four days. We were all sweltering last summer - we're not used to the heat.

(15,480 posts)My son planned to have a week of cross-country skiing in Talkeetna/Denali in November (he was taking a break between 4 months in the Aleutians/Pribilof Islands and returning to the lower 48) - said there should have been enough snow for that in November, but such was not the case this year.
Meanwhile, in southwestern Pennsylvania, my neighbors are still having to mow their lawns in December (unheard of in the 46 years I've lived in the area) and are doing so in shorts.

(16,188 posts)it was snowing. It snowed like I never saw snow before. Sometime in April 73, break up occurred and it stopped snowing.
I was there until 3/76 and never saw the ground after October and before March any year.
I've read about the drunken trees and the houses that are working their way through the perma frost. What a sad state of denial these corporations are in to think what they exude doesn't harm any of us.
That's scary Blue. Good luck in the future.
Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)Yes, that's the way I remember it, too. The snow came in October and stayed until April. There might be a Chinook or two during the winter, but never enough to melt anything. This is just really wrong.

(4,590 posts)and winter was on starting in October. Lots of snow, lots of very cold temps, and like you said, Blue, the occasional chinook which used to drive me crazy. I remember doing recess duty in the late 90's, it was late April, and I was hating a very cold wind.
Yeah, I just talked to a buddy of mine up there yesterday and he was saying it was such a pretty day, but so wrong. Last time I was up there was at least 5 years ago in June and as I walked out to my friends car it was just hot. I don't remember hot in Anchorage.
