The artist, John Howard Sanden, has confided that the trickiest part in painting his first portrait of a president was to avoid any hint of that trademark smirk.

"The smirk shows up when he doesn't want it, and he tends to mug for the camera, as though he can't help it," Sanden said in an interview with American Artist magazine after landing the commission.
