Even if Penn was totally blameless, just the mere suspicion or
slightest hint of involvement is more than enough justification
for the players involved to go after him.

As a Mexican national, the actress that arranged the meeting is
probably even more at risk.

If I were either... I'd be looking at hiring some serious security
and hiding place right about now.

Sean Penn Meeting Helped in 'Chapo' Guzman's Downfall: Sources

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A secretive meeting that Hollywood star Sean Penn orchestrated with Joaquin "Chapo" Guzman in a jungle hideout late last year helped Mexico's government catch the world's most wanted drug lord, sources said.

Guzman, the infamous boss of the Sinaloa drug cartel, was arrested in northwest Mexico on Friday morning, and sent back to the prison he broke out of in July through a mile-long tunnel that led straight into his cell.

Penn said in the article that he was sure the Mexican government and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration was tracking him.

And two senior Mexican government sources said they were indeed aware of the October meeting and monitored his movements.

That helped lead them days later to a ranch where Guzman was staying, one of the sources said. Mexican forces used helicopter gunships to attack Guzman's ranch during a siege that lasted days.

In the US, a problem might have arisen if the Justice Department were still pursuing Guzman, New York free speech attorney Floyd Abrams said, adding Penn would also not have faced legal jeopardy had he met Guzman simply as a private citizen.

"The fact that he's acting as a journalist, if anything, would be even more helpful in showing that he wasn't engaged in some conspiracy," he said.

"Had he given him money, had he given him advice of some sort, how to avoid detection, that might be something else," Mr Adams said.
