Schmootzi the Clod and Meshugunah Joe of God’s Favorite Beefcake murdered Wednesday at Seattle’s Cafe Racer
Today some random lunatic walked through the front door of the Cafe Racer in Seattle and shot five people. Two of those people were Drew “Schmootzi” Keriakedes and “Meshugunah” Joe Albanese, two great musicians and songwriters whose Work has been profoundly influential in the bohemian revival, and I suppose it’s a death that would have been to their liking. I wouldn’t mind it myself – some days it feels like that old hail of bullets can’t come soon enough. Some days I hope they give me just a little while longer.

Joe was a quiet, thoughtful man. He played the hell out of his bass in Circus Contraption , The Moonpenny Opera , God’s Favorite Beefcake , and numerous other projects; and that’s about all I know about him. People loved Joe.


Schmootzi was something to behold. If you’ve ever heard Circus Contraption, or if you were fortunate enough to see them perform in person, then you know Drew. There was Armitage Shanks, the mannered and theatrical baritone who served as the ringmaster and frontman of the ensemble; but Schmootzi was equally prominent both as a lead vocalist and as an onstage personality. During their celebrated run off-off-Broadway in 2005, reviewers would inevitably speak of the “authentic” degeneracy and creepiness of the band; and I think most would agree that this reflects Schmootzi’s part of the fun....(more @ link)
