Believe~

When I think of the water crisis in Flint, the urban rot in Detroit, the violence in Chicago, the poverty in Appalachia, I wonder how different these places might now be if politicians really did put people first. How different these places might now be if citizens did more demanding and less excusing. What would happen if we really were our brother`s keeper and required the same from our elected leaders? People DO have the power, but only if we use it, only if we hold it up as an incentive for political leaders to listen....and act.

I think of mainstream media`s utter failure with in-depth reporting on issues that really matter to us. I guarantee that by the end of this week we`ll see more coverage of Trump`s asinine bloviating than we`ll see of lead-poisoned people of Flint. We could do something about this if we wanted to, but instead we lap up total nonsense about Marco Rubio`s boots or Bernie Sanders` hair.

Right now we`re poll crazy. Hillary is down, Bernie is up. Hillary is up, Bernie is down. Have pollsters spoken with potato farmers in Aroostook County, Maine? Unemployed steelworkers? How about the woman who cleans the laundromat in the town next to me? The guy who works outside changing tires all day? I doubt it.

Today`s fight for the soul of the Democratic Party is a worthwhile one. Those of us who marched against the war in Vietnam and fought for civil rights, understand the value of standing up for what you believe in. During that time, we didn`t have cell phones or computers, yet we turned out by the hundreds of thousands....just because we believed. We didn`t half believe, we didn`t part time believe, we didn`t calculate our beliefs, we simply believed....way down deep and no matter what.
