(44,583 posts)A single tweet of Anthony Weiner's underwear killed his political career forever.
But because Donald Trump says and does so many outrageous things, incidents like this will get lost in the mix.

(3,447 posts)They really aren't very good at this, are they? They still think it's 1954.
EDIT: Okay, it may be a bit early to say 'every'. But 'several' at the very least.

(44,583 posts)As to "bait"?

(3,447 posts)...then waits for them to do so so he can make a short quip back that endears him to his followers and gains him more (because other people see him becoming popular and they don't like to feel left out - Ashe Experiments, for example).
It's practically how his whole campaign was run because the media can't help but trip over themselves in a rush to show that THIS time is the time he's going to fail, not once realizing that doesn't work when you're the establishment. That's why it was called Rules for Radicals, not Rules for the Status Quo.
Expect a pro-White response to this. He'll win a LOT of followers from that just because there isn't a current Democrat left who can even say the word 'white' without coming across like a zealot or a coward. And he'll have us in a bad place (hence the bait) because no one will come out to say anything nice about a white person, the media will run with a standard 'lets try to poo-poo his comment' and that response will be served as further 'evidence' that Trump is right to his followers and their friends ("If I weren't right, would they waste their precious time writing about it to say I'm wrong?" or something to that effect). It's beautiful, from a detached, clinical point of view. Fortunately, I don't like to look at things from that perspective for long because it's rather icky.

(44,583 posts)I mean, the guy retweeted a message from a Twitter user whose handle was "White Genocide". You don't even have to go into the Twitter account to know that there's going to be some nasty stuff in there.
If Donald Trump was polling at 2% it might be another story. But we are talking about a guy who's the leading candidate for the nomination of one of the two major political parties in this country.
And what's happened here isn't necessarily indicative that Donald Trump is a neo-Nazi or supports the theory of White Genocide, but rather that he's such an ego-driven narcissist that any sort of attention or adulation from any source, no matter how repugnant, will be trumpted as a positive thing.
And that's a newsworthy phenomenon in my opinion.

(3,447 posts)And (playing Trump-style Devil's Advocate, NOT to be confused with actual beliefs) besides, did he say anything nasty? Why would 'white genocide' automatically have 'nasty' stuff in it? What word tells you that there is going to be 'nasty' content in that account? White? (See? It doesn't matter how you respond at that point, you're already on the defensive and in case many haven't noticed, 'racist' isn't exactly gaining any traction anymore.) EDIT: In case it isn't clear, I wanted to note that this segment is meant to show just how simple it is to turn a generic comment around, not to attack your specific comment as if there were something wrong with it, Tommy.
It's simply too easy to spin for literally no purpose. There is nothing new to learn from this 'story', there is nothing to gain from this 'story', there really isn't even a 'story' at all! ("Man repeats something another man said, News at 11!"
That's what's frustrating about it. Because they're so rabid to jump on literally anything so they can be the one who 'sunk Donald Trump' that he'll jerk them around all over the place, gaining followers as he does. They can't ignore him because he makes them so much money and it's too late to start now because it would be transparent at this point, but they could definitely be more selective on what they run with.

(44,583 posts)1. That the leading candidate of a major political party has so little critical thinking skills that he doesn't even bother to investigate a Twitter account named "White Genocide" before re-tweeting it
and
2. That the leading candidate of a major political party has an ego so large and insatiable that he will repeat any sort of presumed praise or validation of himself completely regardless of the source of said validation/praise
The content of the Tweet was of course a McGuffin, a non-issue to the much greater issue of the glaring personality defect of a man who--I hate to even say this--could potentially be the 45th President of the United States.
I mean, I suppose the media and the rest of us could just stick our head in the sand and hope against hope Donald Trump goes away, but we've pretty much passed the point of no-return there. That ship has passed. Donald Trump, like it or not, is a news story and what he does and who he reveals himself to be is a news story.
