Chargers to stay in San Diego for 2016

And will leverage the bejesus out of the city. Happy the city has a chance to save them but am afraid they are going to get bent over in the new stadium deal. The NFL and Spanos' will get public money, the taxpayers get a home team that they can watch on TV.

And the 100 million guaranteed from the NFL will get consumed in planning fees billed to the NFL and then offset by numerous kick backs.

1. I am almost willing to bet that this goes to the voter

and the voters will say NYET.

People remember the guarantees and the city going bankrupt in 2002. It was one of the reasons.

They are also building a new training facility in Santa Anna and have apparently reached an agreement with the RAMS.

2. I hope so

LA telling the NFL to pound sand is one thing, we need more cities to stand up to the greedy bastards.

3. The division even within the council is palpable

some members are not too happy (they ahem remember) but others are going CHARGERS, CHARGERS...

It is also inversely proportional to being termed out, or friendly to developers.

Now the Mayor... he is all in, but as I said, they are moving to LA but they need to play here for one more season. Mostly the where the hell do we have them play?

And the players (and team) demanding that the stadium be filled to capacity was all kinds of yes, well kind of funny.

4. You have it right nadin

I live down town and take part in quite a bit of sports bar fun, padres games, etc. The people down here are not going to vote to give the chargers half a billion dollars for a new stadium. Most randoms I talk to next to me are pissed off that the charger's owner is basically trying to hold us all hostage. Qualcomm stadium needs to get upgraded, but the guy making the $$$ from ticket sales is the one who should pay for it. That is the vibe I get every weekend

5. That is also the vibe I get from covering Council

and talking to people who are politically involved It is a very different crowd, but I am glad to see it is the same vibe.

I suspect the Mayor runs on keeping the charges, will get Saldana in office. Yes, it is THAT BAD

6. I hope you are right and everyone holds firm

You will have a lot of experts going on and on about being a big league city, how can you be a big league city if you only have MLB? It works on cities like Phx where residents feel they just joined the club and need to cave to stay in the club. Hopefully most realize they don't actually attend a game often, and is cheaper to jump on a flight somewhere to catch a game every couple years.

That being said, I can't see LA supporting two teams, let alone two teams in Inglewood.

8. I dunno

Maybe there will be talk like that... But honestly SD never sells out padre games even with their awesome down town location. With ideal weather 95% of the year, and so much great stuff to do in SD, not many people are willing to pay $ to go to the ball game when the beach is free

7. It would be ridiculous for them to leave a city that loves them for a city where they have NO FANS.

Seriously, LA doesn't want them. There are FAR MORE Raiders fans in the LA area than Chargers fans.

If anyone is going to join the Rams in L.A. it should be the Raiders.

And the most important team for Oakland to hold onto is the A's. If they shell out for a new stadium it should be for them.
