With only 5 months to go in the Massachusetts senatorial campaign, Elizabeth Warren is only tied with incumbent Scott Brown in the polls.
Sure, the Krugmanesque firebaggers are spouting gibberish like "Five whole months? And she hasn't begun attacking her opponent yet? And she's tied, and keeps making gains in the polls? WTF are you talking about that she's toast?"
But experienced and realistic adults realize that there's too little time to make up such a vast gulf in those polling numbers. Because of the Bay State's foolish and impulsive selection of an FDR Liberal as their candidate, Brown will be their senator for six more years.
We should all heed this lesson.
Sincerely,
Third-Way Manny

(1,191 posts)the banks "predatory" activities. I have family members that have lost their home to foreclosure, it is a horrible thing to have happen, especially if you've been in the house for years, put your blood sweat and tears into it, and then have big bank fat cats decide to take it all away from you and leave you in the street.
Then, to top it off, you have a "DEMOCRATIC" candidate for US senate come along and make f**king money directly from your misfortune ??!!
I would expect this behavior from the Republicans, but I'm sorry, that fact that she did this sickens me!
here is one link, but if you do a google search, you will see that this sad story is all over the news.

(27,670 posts)Thanks for posting this article that is derived from a RW hit piece that uses disingenuously presented material. That propaganda material was based on transactions from the 1990's between 1993 and 1997. One transaction took place in 2000.
First of all, home loan interest rates were much higher in the 90's and early 2000's than they are today. The article makes no mention of this. So yes, she did loan money to her family at much higher interest rates than are the norm for today. But not out of line with interest rates at the time - the mid 90's.
Second, she loaned money to her relatives to buy homes. Her relatives could have gotten a loan from the bank. To make things easier for them, she loaned them the money they wanted to borrow. Duh.
Third, The GLBA caused the deregulation of the financial industry by repealing sections 20 and 32, and amending section 16, of the Glass Steagall Act.
This allowed bank holding companies to expand their securities and insurance activities to become financial holding companies as of March 11, 2000.
This was after Elizabeth bought and sold the homes referenced in the article.
So why don't you take your RW propaganda bullshit and stick it where the sun don't shine.
Have a nice time here at DU.

(37,648 posts)SHE isn't the one who foreclosed on the home. It's a house on the market that she got at a reasonable price, I assume.
It'd be no different if you were looking to buy a house, and bought one that is on the market because of a foreclosure. Those homes are not sold for a few dollars, like a tax sale. They are usu. sold at reasonable prices; they're not given away.
Sometimes foreclosed homes/condos are sold to HUD to be used as Section 8 housing, for low income but employed people. Are the people who live in housing provided by the govt for low income living off of others' misfortunes? Not hardly.

(1,644 posts)I could be wrong about that, of course; and hope I am. But, once the folks see you as a laughingstock, then a meme has set in. It has happened to politicians of both parties. Gerald Ford was actually an accomplished athlete, rather than the stumblebum that Chevy Chase made him out to be. Al Gore has lost much of the respect he held with the public, because his critics succeeded in making him into a joke. I fear Ms. Warren will not recover from this.

Doesn't make sense. What Democrats have said this about Elizabeth Warren? Where is there any indication the Democrats have abandoned her?
RZM
(8,556 posts)Had they relented on her being head of the Consumer Protection Bureau, then she would be busy with that and Brown would probably be in a better position.
Instead they were hard-headed and inadvertently pushed her towards a Senate race that she has a good shot at winning.
Leave it to Washington types to never take the long view unless it's about their own careers.

(135,425 posts)But it might have been Seti Warren, mayor of Newton.
Of course, there were a number of viable candidates before EW jumped in, but EW really has the ability to drag in the national cash--and she does have a sweet resume.

Same thing here in Ohio. A real Republican candidate could probably defeat Sherrod Brown. But Josh Mandel? Who's only a year older than me? Not happening.

(135,425 posts)If I were going to run for office, instead of supporting other candidates for the jobs as I enjoy doing, I'd start out on the bottom rungs to get myself a base! Don't count EW out. Nothing really happens until September. Everyone's at the beach until Labor Day.
And no one I know likes the Naked Nitwit. How many times do we have to look at his shitty commercial of him drinking coffee and sitting on his ass while some waitress tells him he can have another cup? I don't know who's running his media, but they've got their heads up their own -- or Scottie's -- ass...his commercial is easily among the most noxious going! It makes one want to coffee-poop!

(6,161 posts)EVERYONE is pulling for Warren. Btw, divide & conquer is a GOP tactic. We're a big tent party and I welcome all, including centrist Democrats. Of course we would love more Liberals elected, but not every region in the U.S. that is represented by the D's will elect one. Think W.Virginia and most of the south. I'd rather have a center-left D than watch the entire south go republican, lose majorities.

'The Bay State's foolish and impulsive selection of an FDR Liberal'...
They had the 'FDR Liberal' Ted Kennedy as their senator for over 45 years, until he died in office. And they have had another 'FDR Liberal', John Kerry, as their senator for 28 years now.
So stop spreading doom and gloom!

The question was "If you could reverse ONE Presidential election since Watergate, which one would it be?"
Manny's answer was 2008. Not Reagan over Carter in 1980, or Bush over Gore in 2000. Manny said that the ONE election in the past 40 years that they would most liked to have reversed was Obama vs McCain in 2008.
