before the entire GOP jumped the rails, but not any more. The so-called Eisenhower Republicans, like my parents, were not extreme right-wing ideologues, but those people are long gone. Today's GOP is so extreme that I can't imagine a loyal Democrat voting for any of them.

Trust me, things have changed. Trump and Cruz, in particular, are just symptoms of where the GOP has allowed itself to go, which is down a very dark and dangerous road. There has always been an undercurrent of really nasty racism and xenophobia but it wasn't allowed to come to the surface until now. Trump et al. have validated the worst impulses of the extreme right. It's very different now that it was when I was a kid.

Worked for Gene McCarthy's 1968 campaign even though I couldn't vote for him; first presidential vote was for George McGovern in 1972. If you've only been at it since 2004 you're young.

anyone who supports a party that is racist, misogynistic, homophobic, xenophobic, pro-senseless war, pro-torture, pro-gun humping, anti-worker, anti-science, anti-poor etc is an ASSHOLE

who are racist, etc., but those attitudes are not the official policies of the party. On the other hand, the GOP candidates seem to be embracing and encouraging them. That's a huge difference between the two parties.

It's still theoretically possible that voting for a Republican over a Democrat would be the right thing, but it's been many years since I've seen a real, live example. Refusing to vote is just silly, and there is no justification for it.

where the Republican was no worse than the Democrat. I could have voted for either or neither of them. But it's been decades since I've known of a single Republican that I'd have voted for without being held at gunpoint.

Because Dems nominated an inexperienced Obama and is warning us against making the same mistake this time. People weren't real receptive to that advice.

What could possibly cause a Democrat to vote McCain/Palin?

Especially considering the fact that Palin was one heartbeat away from the presidency.

You're saying you won't vote for the Democratic nominee if it's Bernie, right?
