"Men invented the internet"

What a steaming turd of an opening line in David Streitfeld's otherwise serviceable New York Times piece about the Ellen Pao/Kleiner Perkins sexual harassment lawsuit, and gender discrimination in Silicon Valley.

MEN invented the Internet. And not just any men. Men with pocket protectors. Men who idolized Mr. Spock and cried when Steve Jobs died. Nerds. Geeks. Give them their due. Without men, we would never know what our friends were doing five minutes ago.

You guys, ladies suck at technology and the New York Times is ON IT.

Radia "Mother of the Internet" Perlman and the ghosts of RADM Grace Hopper, Ada Lovelace and every woman who worked in technology for the past 150 years frown upon you, sir. Women may have been invisible, but the work we did laid the groundwork for more visible advancements now credited to more famous men.

"Men are credited with inventing the internet." There. Fixed it for you.

I liked her a lot. Grace never took any shit. And she was sharp as ten new tacks.

Men invented the internet ( some participated in the process, I guess )

Men with pocket protectors ( no )

Men who idolized Mr. Spock ( no)

cried when Steve Jobs died ( no )

Geeks. ( really? )

Give them their due ( How gracious of you, Mr. Communications Major. Too bad 'geeks' aren't important like you. )

Etc. etc.

While we're on the subject, did anyone else listen to Diane Rehm this morning? The lady from US-CERT seemed to know her business, but those two reporters were absolutely clueless. I mean, their solution to "cyberwarfare" is to write code with less bugs. Really? Wow, never would have thought of that one, lol. They also explained how your computer has to be both powered off AND have wifi disabled in order to be "hackproof".

I especially liked that guy from the Washington Post who repeatedly used "cyber" as a noun. I can guarandamntee you that this guy couldn't set the time on a microwave oven. The fact that anyone takes these people seriously is a travesty.

le sigh...

Much of the show was cringeworthy.

I wanted to tell reporter guy about the daemons on my computer just to freak him out.

She spoke at my graduation from Coleman College. Not sure how they managed to get her but she gave a great talk. I'll always remember her line about asking the machinist to cut her a couple of nano-seconds. Fabulous mind and still sharp as a tack...so much so they didn't seem to want to let her retire.

Yeah, it's still hard (the holey peeeenis) because too many smart women might actually threaten this--and it would be the end of the world as we know it.
