(13,447 posts)SALT LAKE CITY There is a large police presence in downtown Salt Lake City Saturday night, and dispatch officials confirm officers are responding to reports of a shooting.
FOX 13 News first heard reports of shots fired in the area of the 300 South and Rio Grande Street just before 8 p.m. Salt Lake City Police dispatch confirms there was a shooting in the area, but no further details were immediately available.
Officers from Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Unified PD and Utah Highway Patrol were on scene and were observed to be attempting to get several large crowds of people to disperse from the area.
As of about 8:35 p.m., many people in those crowds appeared upset, with some yelling or spitting at officers.

(8,028 posts)...over 100 cops on scene. I think the kid is deceased but they're still trying to keep that info out of the media.
It happened by the homeless shelter which has hundreds of people hanging in the vicinity at any given time and lots of drugs and prostitution. It's an area where the rich and poor cross paths. Lots of effort to remove the homeless shelter from the downtown Salt Lake City area.
The situation is still fluid...
My info is coming from local breaking news.

(465 posts)Looks like a Skid Row type neighborhood.

(8,028 posts)...is definitely 'skid row' but it's surrounded by high end shopping, theater/opera, restaurants, night clubs and the Utah Jazz arena. It was allegedly two black kids from Kenya that got into some kind of altercation at the Gateway outdoor mall area. The kid who was shot was holding a stick of some kind. Cops were called and the kid with the stick was shot 4 times. I'm pretty sure he's deceased.
A riot ensued as people were disgusted by the cops mowing down the 17 yo kid with the stick. He was there with his 19 yo friend...

SALT LAKE CITY -- Police shot a suspect in the Rio Grande District of Salt Lake City Saturday night who was involved in a physical altercation, and crowds of angry people reacting to the incident shouted and threw things at officers, prompting a massive police response.
TRAX service has been disrupted and police confirmed shortly before 10 p.m. that a four-block radius around the Gateway Mall will be closed for the next several hours due to the incident and investigation.
FOX 13 News first heard reports of shots fired in the area of the 300 South and Rio Grande Street just before 8 p.m. Salt Lake City Police initially confirmed there was a shooting, but it wasn't until just after 10 p.m. that they confirmed it was an officer-involved shooting.
Witnesses at the scene tell FOX 13 News' Robert Boyd police officers shot a 17-year-old teen who was involved in a fight with an older male, prompting an angry reaction from witnesses who felt they did not give the teen, who was reportedly wielding a broomstick, a chance to surrender. Police have confirmed two officers were involved and that at least one officer fired shots.

(34,857 posts)A 16/17 year old black teen, possibly from Kenya, got into an argument with an older male around a homeless shelter in the Rio Grande neighborhood of downtown SLC. He was carrying a broomstick. Witnesses at the scene say two cops approached him, told him to drop the broom, and as he turned around, one officer opened fire 4 or 5 times. Those same witnesses are claiming the police didn't give the teen any time to surrender before shooting. This prompted an angry response that led to the rioting.
The teen's condition is unknown.
