Trump: Judge's ethnicity matters in Trump University suit

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump is trying to deflect attention from a class-action civil lawsuit involving the former Trump University by pointing to the ethnic background of the judge in the case.

Asked on "Fox News Sunday" what U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel's ethnicity has to do with the lawsuit against him, Trump replied:

"I think it has to do perhaps with the fact that I'm very, very strong on the border, very, very strong at the border, and he has been extremely hostile to me," Trump said.

According to the California class-action complaint in front of Curiel, a one-year apprenticeship that Trump University students were promised ended after students paid for a three-day seminar. Attendees who were promised a personal photo with Trump received only the chance to take a photo with a cardboard cutout. And many instructors were bankrupt real estate investors.

He stood there, waiting for his order, swastikas on his sleeves, something-white power on the back of his jacket, tattoos signifying his perceived dominance up and down his arms and on his neck. The cooks, in the kitchen, visible through the order window, kept looking up at him then talking among themselves, occasionally laughing. One of the cooks was black, the other maybe Hispanic (I'd make a terrible bigot). It didn't take long, and soon the skinhead was on his way, carrying his meal in a paper bag.

I wondered at the time, and still do, what else did he carry out that day?

For there's your problem, Mr Trump: When you bluster and fuss and make of yourself a despicable sight, there'll always be those who find you offensive. And in the world in which we live, Mr Trump, far too often those who are offended have their own remedies at hand. Good luck with that lawsuit, Mr Trump. I'm reasonably certain Gonzalo Curiel will give you far more even-handed treatment than you've been doling out throughout your campaign. Just as I'm positive His Honor will give you the justice you deserve.
