I am watching Nancy Reagan's funeral services. As I am wont to do as I have attended too many funerals to count, I am caused to feel the love and the loss of those who attended with me. When the funeral was for a loved one, a parent, the feelings differ mostly by degree. And so I am moved by this funeral as well.
Rest well, Nancy. We are all flawed, but we all deserve respect and a peaceful farewell.

(90,690 posts)I mean, I opposed President Reagan with all my being, but Ronnie and Nancy were in some respects like a single person. On this day, let no ill be spoken of the dead.

What specifically leads you to believe this?

(9,186 posts)and she wed the man she loved. I may disagree with her political bent and her simplified outlook on momentous problems (just say no), but she was a human being, she was loved and she loved others. She will be missed by her family and friends.
May she rest in peace.

(90,690 posts)I remember reading that the children -- all 4 of them -- were outside the bubble that was NancyRonnie, and they knew it.
It's complicated. I remember having to find the words at my own mother's funeral, and I wonder if my own daughter will ever be able to.
All the former First Ladies were there as well as Michelle, even Roslyn Carter, whose own age is now so evident (oh wait -- did Barbara Bush make it? she's another now very old). A lot of people here can't seem to grasp that, beyond what simple decency and dignity demand as regards public demeanor, all the occupants of the White House share something that no one else ever will.
