(20,317 posts)He's described himself as a "cop on the beat"; someone who "holds politicians' feet to the fire". It's absurd to anyone watching, of course, and his constant references to palling around with this or that politician make it clear that he is way, way to close to this system to be any sort of antagonist, but he does seem to believe it somehow.

Keith Olbermann, the leading liberal voice on American television in the age of Obama, was suspended Friday after his employer, MSNBC, discovered he made campaign contributions to three Democrats last month.
The indefinite suspension was a stark display of the clash between objectivity and opinion in television journalism. While Mr. Olbermann is anchor of what is essentially the Democratic Nightly News, the decision affirmed that he was being held to the same standards as other employees of MSNBC and its parent, NBC News, both of which answer to NBC Universal. Most journalistic outlets discourage or directly prohibit campaign contributions by employees.
Mr. Olbermanns contributions came to light in an article by Politico on Friday morning. He said he had donated $2,400 to the campaigns of Representatives Raúl M. Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona and Attorney General Jack Conway of Kentucky, who lost his Senate race to Rand Paul. He told Politico, I did not privately or publicly encourage anyone else to donate to these campaigns, nor to any others in this election or any previous ones, nor have I previously donated to any political campaign at any level.
On Friday evening, no one at NBC suggested that Mr. Olbermann would be fired.

(4,213 posts)I don't watch his show. I find him incredibly annoying, and he is rarely insightful.
However, this "scandal" makes two ridiculous assumptions and then creates a ridiculous standard.
First, it makes the ridiculous assumption that Matthews is aware of who is donating to his wife's campaign. Second, it makes the ridiculous assumption that Matthews brings them on air as a result of their contribution to her campaign. There is absolutely no evidence of this. Does anyone want to make the argument that he only had Senator Kirsten Gillibrand on his show because she donated to his wife's campaign? Seriously?
Then there is the ridiculous standard that is being made, which is an attempt to prove the second ridiculous assumption. That ridiculous standard is that Matthews should somehow have known who would donate to his wife's campaign AFTER they appeared on his show, and therefore should be required to disclose that information. What? What does he have, a time machine? He is not only keeping personal track of his wife's campaign finances as if he is personally managing her campaign (the first ridiculous assumption being made), he now also is required to possess knowledge of what is going to happen in the future, then travel back in time to let everyone know.
The only scandal here is that this was allowed to go to print, and people are actually suckers enough to go along.

(1,588 posts)There were many times he would ask guests questions and would never let them answer. I would very much like to have heard the answers. He interrupted over and over again before the respondents could ever utter an entire sentence. MSNBC has truly gone downhill and Matthews has gone down the fastest.
