(30,439 posts)The post which referred to African Americans as battered wives suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.
Do you see how it could be offensive to African Americans on DU?

(1,615 posts)and i'm sorry you shut it down
maybe it's not my place to say but frequently seems that AAs and other minorities are in a selfconfidence crisis and overreact to perceived, or real slights.
have contacted a few blm folk on twitter on this point "YOU MEAN YOU WANT BLACK PPL TO DIE!!1"
yeah that's it.

(10,650 posts)What you posted doesn't sound bad enough to get someone banned.
Yes, I see how it could be offensive, but lots of things are offensive. That's life. Sometimes people need a thicker skin and to involve themselves in a dialog. That's what we're here for right?

(37,748 posts)Denying the existence of a reason is not the same as the non-existence of a reason. You were in fact, allowed a reason for any and all curious to see. A rather valid reason at that which yet still exists in that particular thread. That you choose to ignore the existence of the reason is on you and no one else.
However, I completely understand your desire to construct a very creative cross from which to melodramatically hang while playing martyr. I can only imagine a most serious and somber Hans Zimmer film score playing to the scene.

(7,804 posts)No banning, really, very little moderation, no way of crafting the zeitgeist.
Recommends regularly in the thousands on videos of interest. Views topping DU by orders of magnitude.
PEOPLE saying USEFUL, INTERESTING STUFF.
I converted a diehard Republican homophobe there only a week or two ago with a handful of anecdotes about my actual real life.

(1,615 posts)still some good posts and defos to the left of kos but not what it should be
never would have guessed that running el bernardo would have spelt the end of the progressive voice on the major leftwing forums.

(7,804 posts)I wonder how much time some of them spend on other boards or in other areas of the Internet...
Not much, I'll bet.
I'm rarely to be found on tribal boards these days. It's a bad idea. They become paranoid rapidly and develop almost inescapably into attention sinks. Even my facebook profile is becoming drenched in silly pseudopolitical wafflings. I switch most of it off these days as I have no desire to fall out with my friends.
It's a pity. It's nice to feel a bit like a big fish in a small pond... but it's not good for you in the long run.
As for Mr Sanders, nadine put it best...

(2,227 posts)anything. So, its no big deal. I will just continue trying the best I can do get Bernie elected. Not much else to do.

(7,804 posts).... it's become less important to me now that UK politics is turning really, truly fucking weird. The left over here is fracturing also but in a far more dangerous way. I'm not convinced there will be any left wing ANYTHING in the UK (besides some in Scotland, which I can't see surviving much longer now either) before long. The LW papers are scrambling to try and reassert their authority over their base, which has been in open revolt for months.
But, yes. Bernie would be a good thing.
litlbilly
(2,227 posts)to fix it. In the UK, here and everywhere basically. We cant just lay down and give up
sibelian
(7,804 posts)Language is being distorted everywhere and everyone's slapping stupid pseudo-psychoanalytical labels on everything instead of actually analysing the subject to find out what's happening.
The Internet is in fact making it all worse, not better. SUBSTANTIALLY worse. It's dumbing everyone down to a terrible extent.
I have a very nasty feeling that most of what 's being posted around the lefty houses and written in the papers and blogged about and shared is going to turn out to be somewhat irrelevant.
I think Trump's going to win no matter who goes up against him.
litlbilly
(2,227 posts)It will just take time as well to sort itself out.
sibelian
(7,804 posts)It's just...
Junk.
Reflexive labelling. Circular firing squads. People habitually reinforcing simplistic slogans and meaningless soundbites, politics-as-lol-cat. Dumb bingo cards collecting your opponents arguments instead of addressing them.
Huge sections of demographics slotting themselves into behaviour patterns that consist of nothing more than banging your head against a brick wall.
And it's good news for advertisers. They are much happier with people banging their heads against brick walls than going elsewhere. More views for the advert.
I wonder if someone did a study comparing the *breadth* of Internet penetration these days in comparison with the past if they would find that people have a far greater tendency these days to stick to one or two favourite sites than go exploring...
I know that I see the same ideas being repeated over and over again in the same quarters far more than I used to.
I think the Internet as a medium for the exchange or development of ideas may be drawing to a close...
New political paradigms are not favoured in media that focus on simplistic messages...

(69,370 posts)I'm white, and I've been reading and posting in the AA group for years. I step in it sometimes, but I've never been blocked. Not even threatened or warned. I believe that the African American group is one of the most tolerant groups on DU.
And not all its members support Hillary. That's just another stereotype.
redruddyred
(1,615 posts)AA group seems okay and reasonable imo i have not had any problems either but am also careful to not say anything that could be construed racist

(69,370 posts)If you go to the AA group read one of the threads at the top, under the pinned threads. A bunch of people dropped in today to be rude, and one of the hosts blocked several of them. Well deserved blocks. They were repeatedly warned that they were in the AA group but continued with their rude posts.
