Company reinvents the lunch box

Packing attention to detail, intelligent design and delicious food into lunchtime is San Francisco-based team Prepd, founded by Chris Place and Will Matters. Their creation, ‘Prepd Pack’, is a modern take on the classic lunchbox, launched in January 2016 via a Kickstarter campaign that raised over $1 million.

The traditional brown bag crumples in comparison to the durability and maturity of ‘Prepd Pack’. Magnetic cutlery rests securely within the centre of the ‘Prepd Case’, while an in-built silicone placemat allows diners a proper mealtime setup. Pack lunches in advance within the leak-proof, clear containers and stack them up in the freezer for the week ahead or pop them in the microwave to reheat and enjoy. The containers can also be worked into different configurations to suit your individual needs. Transporting lunch to the workplace – sans spills, rips or blips – has never been simpler.

Upgrading your lunchbox to the ‘Prepd Pack’ also means incorporating the speed and ease of technology into how meals are chosen and regulated. Using the ‘Prepd App’, you can browse ‘make at home’ recipes and meal plans developed by professional nutritionists and chefs. The app integrates effortlessly into your daily routine, devising customised shopping lists that help you keep track of your grocery spending, while advising on what and how much to buy. ‘Prepd Pack’ makes meeting health goals and diet types easier and once you join the Prepd community, you have the option to create your own profile page where you can save and develop recipes, as well as share tips and food tricks with other users.

Further, the 'Prepd App' automatically collects data to quantify how many calories have been consumed. This info is visualised in the app to give meaningful feedback about the diner’s diet.

Encouraging people to pack their own lunches, Prep also hopes to decrease the amount of food and packaging waste in the world. The lunchbox materials are all created from high quality recycled and sustainable materials, meaning ‘Prepd Pack’ both looks great, and is good for the environment too.

However, it doesn't look like it's insulated. Also, those dressing containers don't look like they seal as well as the rest of the food containers. I guess that's okay if you don't mind your salad dressed up several hours ahead of time

Here's where I go for food containers and lunchbags/boxes.

One of my favorite lunch "containers" is the "Wrap-N-Mat." You can wrap up odd-shaped items or large sandwiches. Plus, it unfolds into a nice eating mat, like a small tablecloth. I've had people comment that they liked that aspect to it. I don't know if they then went and bought one or not, but at least people responded positively.

About a year ago, I updated my previous tall and skinny lunch bag to one that kind of has the shape of an oldstyle metal lunch box, yet is all insulated. Its footprint is a little larger, but it's shorter and a bit stiffer.

It's a good lunch bag, and I expect to have it around a long time

My thoughts exactly.

Where's the damned Thermos for the soup?

Sorry, its got to have soup, 2 sandwiches (at least) chips, pickles, fruit cup (or 2) cookies, maybe a slice of pie or cake, bottle of wine, cheese assortment...and anything else that strikes my fancy while my head is in the fridge.

Here's my idea of a proper lunch box:

Those stretchy holder strappy thingys can keep a bottle of vodka in place just as easy as a bottle of Chardonnay!

It is up to the user to create his own healthy, lunchtime assortment.

Olives optional, of course.

Not sure when I will ever use it but I have fond memories of helping my grandma load it up with sandwiches and snacks for his shifts at the taconite mine. He always knew when I 'helped' - apparently I used every condiment and possible lunch meat/cheese combination - but he ate it.

That reads just like pure marketing material. Is that how 'Wallpaper*' works? I've heard it's incredibly pretentious, but I did assume it had some basic journalistic standards.

No mention of cost, I see. Again, Wallpaper has the reputation of not caring what anything costs, but you'd think they'd give some idea. Or are they waiting to see how many people accept the marketing before deciding what they can ask?

Ah - it's on the company site. Starts at $55. For a few boxes.

They're canvas bags that come in a variety of sizes that have the freezable medium encapsulated in the walls of the bag. I have a small one for when I'm just bringing a can of soda and a carton of yogurt to work and a larger one that will accommodate a full lunch including a can of soda. Just pop the bag itself in the freezer over night and it really does keep things cold, not just cool, for hours. Love these! And I'd be willing to bet cold hard cash that they're less expensive than the one that's pictured.

And, as I said, they come in lots of sizes for different uses. I bought my niece one for Christmas that's sized and shaped to keep a couple of bottles of wine cold, which is nice for summertime concerts in the park. Need to get one of those for myself, now that I think of it.

One of those insulated bags made just the right size for a six pack of beer. He'd put a frozen cold pack in it, a couple of cans of soda and his sandwich in a reusable plastic box in it. He'd get home and the cold pack would still be mostly frozen. All reusable, some was scavenged, no waste.

The cold packs he got at work - he worked at Kinko's/FedEx and the candy they sold in front of the counters came in boxes with cold packs so the candy would not melt as it was shipped to the location. The store normally threw them away so he'd pick them up and bring them home. Over the years he brought home dozens of those cold packs. We "re-homed" a lot of them, passing them along to friends who fished or to people at the Farmer's Market who could use them to keep their products cold as they brought them to sell. Kept them out of the land fill and were of great use to those who we passed them along to!

That ‘Prepd Pack’ does not look insulated, has no handle or strap and does not look very practical, IMO. While it is "stylish" I expect it is very expensive for the job it does. VERY expensive:

My Mom had to pack me something in my Dad's lunch bucket to take to the mine and bring back for me, I couldn't tell time but I knew he was coming home and would hide behind the tree and jump on his leg and he would open his lunch pail and give me a cake and the bottom had water in it and I would get a drink.
