Bad news folks....

Secret Service: No guns in GOP convention

The statement comes in response to a petition that calls for allowing open carry of guns inside Quicken Loans Arena, the host venue.

The petition has amassed more than 43,000 signatures as of Monday morning.

This is a double heart breaker. The petition only got 43,000 signatures.

being President Obama's fault somehow.

But there is no way the GOP wanted delegates or others on the floor with guns.

After all, GE brings good things to life. But a loan shark corporation?

Although at the recent annual meeting it sounded like my credit union is going to get into the loan shark business too.

This is the one time I'm completely against any form of gun control. Let them shoot it out. Had my hopes up for a while.

... I'm feeling it too.

Of course, I don't want anyone actually at risk for being shot - and mixing guns and republican idiots is a recipe for disaster.

But I think it's hilarious that all the rightwing politicians vomit "they're gonna take away your guns!!!" on the stump all year long, but they're scared shitless of their own constituents packing heat in their presence. What are they "asceerd" of? Good guys with guns? Why, that's just Un-American!

The Department of Homeland Security designates certain events as "special events of national significance" base on a set of criteria that clearly encompasses major political party conventions. Once a convention is so designated, the Secret Service automatically becomes the lead agency for coordinating security efforts. The President can't instruct them to "stand down", particularly since the law also provides that Secret Service is to provide protection for major presidential and vice presidential candidates as determined by the DHS Secretary after consultation with a Congressional Advisory Committee that includes the Speaker of the House, House Minority Leader, Senate Majority Leader, Senate Minority Leader, and one additional member selected by the others.

The criteria for protecting a presidential candidate is that the candidate:
◦ Be publically announced
◦ Have some degree of prominence as shown by opinion polls
◦ Be actively campaigning and entered in at least 10 state primaries
◦ Be seeking the nomination of a qualified party
◦ Have qualified for matching funds in the amount of at least $100,000
◦ Have received contributions totaling $10 million

The law also states that the U.S. Secret Service is also authorized to protect spouses of major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates, as identified by the DHS Secretary, within 120 days of the general Presidential election. The repub convention is 113 days prior to election day.
