Authorities say they found at least 50 puppies and small dogs in steel crates inside a van behind a northern New Jersey pet store.
Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg says two officers found the dogs behind Just Pups on Route 17 after they heard crying from inside the vehicle. The officers found several small crates, each with two to four puppies and small dogs inside.
Investigators say the crates were too small for some of the dogs to stand up. Ehrenberg says they contained no food or water and some of the dogs were covered in feces.
Ehrenberg says the temperature inside the van was 38 degrees.

EAST BRUNSWICK A municipal court hearing regarding animal cruelty charges filed against a Route 18 pet shop owner has been postponed.
Vincent (Vinnie) LoSacco, owner of Just Pups LLC, was charged on Feb. 29 with 267 counts of animal cruelty by the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NJSPCA). The hearing had been scheduled for Monday morning in East Brunswick Municipal Court. No new court date has been scheduled, court officials said on Thursday.
In a nearly 10-minute video, LoSacco, who owns and operates four pet shops in the state East Brunswick, Emerson, Paramus and East Hanover as well as a shop in Valhalla, New York, denied any wrongdoing.
"Neither myself nor any of my staff in East Brunswick nor any of my staff anywhere has ever committed any acts of cruelty or neglect to any of the pups in my store," LoSacco said.
The charges against LoSacco stem from the lack of adequate infection control procedures, poor and improper veterinary care and the co-mingling of sick animals with new animals just brought into the premises, according to a statement from the NJSPCA. As a result, animals were unnecessarily exposed to giardia, distemper, upper respiratory infections and other infectious diseases that resulted in the exposure of sick animals to other animals and humans, creating a dangerous condition that threatens the health, safety and welfare of the public.

(18,870 posts)Voters in Missouri passed a bill outlawing selling puppies from commercial breeders and the Missouri legislature overrode it. One of the people in the legislature was in the business - his mother had a puppy mill. They just totally ignored the vote by the people in the state.
So Missouri still has puppy mills. Pet stores still sell puppies from commercial breeders in pet stores.
Too much money is at stake.

(28,394 posts)States that have some kind of law regarding puppy mills: http://nopetstorepuppies.com/laws-that-protect-dogs-in-puppy-mills (Enforcement is shoddy, however.)
Cities that prohibit pet stores from selling puppy mill puppies: http://bestfriends.org/Resources/Jurisdictions-With-Retail-Pet-Sale-Bans/ (There are a few in NJ.) Hopefully, this will spread.
That this practice still goes on is a disgrace.

(18,870 posts)where there was a law against selling puppies in pet stores and the state over turned it with a bill of their own. Don't remember all the particulars but the pet stores had to tell the buyer the name of the breeder. And there were pretty stringent requirements on the breeders and sellers.

Thank goodness I am not a judge. lol
