You wanna know why I left the Republican Party as it exists today? Here it is; this was the last straw: I was in the closed Senate Republican Caucus when the final round of multiple Voter ID bills were being discussed. A handful of the GOP Senators were giddy about the ramifications and literally singled out the prospects of suppressing minority and college voters. Think about that for a minute. Elected officials planning and happy to help deny a fellow American's constitutional right to vote in order to increase their own chances to hang onto power. A vigorous debate on the ideas wasn't good enough. Inspiring the electorate and relying on their agenda being better to get people to vote for them wasn't good enough. No, they had to take the coward's way out and come up with a plan to suppress the vote under the guise of 'voter fraud.' The truth? There was almost none. Oh wait, GOP Speaker Voss' estranged wife voted twice in both Idaho and WI, and a GOP staffer was caught voting twice. But it was good rhetoric. Yesterday, one of my employees, born in California went to get his WI ID. He was told he couldn't use his CA ID to get a WI ID without his birth certificate which is back in CA. The result? He's not able to vote today. Here's a young man in his early 20's, who is taking part and interested in voting for the first time in his life. He was excited to go to the polls. What kind of a state, a legislature, a political party is it that denies this young man his right? The GOP was born out of greater opportunity and equality. Wisconsin, yes the Wisconsin Republican Party, under the leadership of Republican Governor Robert M. 'Fighting Bob' La Follette lead the country in creating greater voting access to its citizens. The WI GOP was seen as a shining example of equality. THAT was the party I joined in the 80's and fought for. That party no longer exists. I don't belong to any party now. I don't think the Dems have all the answers either. But my God, to watch a party I once fought for deny a young man his voting rights...it boils my blood, leaves a pit in my stomach. It's time for a #GOPImplosion

(11,746 posts)They can make it more difficult, but they can't get you to not participate.
They can also sow discord and discontent. That's actually perhaps the only real weapon Republicans have since they cannot appeal beyond their base and they know it. They've known this for decades now. Just Google Jude Wanniski.
They want you to believe there is no difference between them and Democrats. They want you to believe in "a giant 'election industry' in the USA" and anything else that will sow discord and discontent.

(90,061 posts)There is a giant election industry in the USA, there isn't any question about it, many billions of dollars are pissed away on our elections, and they are still awash in various kinds of manipulation and outright fraud

(9,214 posts)how the politicians want it. It's always the other guys fault, and pit the masses against each other instead of the real culprits. Half of the 99% need to wake up and quit blaming the other half for their problems and vice versa. All of the 99% have the same problems for the most part, we need to start realizing who actually is to blame for those problems.

(11,746 posts)That works both ways.
If you have a problem with this "giant election industry in the USA" and their alleged conspiracy to piss away many billions of dollars then do something about it.

(469 posts)Waninski was the "two Santa Claus" guy, who said that since the Dems were winning by being Santa to the poor (welfare), the GOP should play Santa to the rich (tax cuts).
The infamous Weyrich quote goes something like this:
Too many Americans seem to gave what I call "Goo-Goo" syndrome - they believe that Government is Good, and they want everybody to vote. I don't want everybody to vote. Frankly, the more people who vote, the less leverage we have.

(3,830 posts)Do you remember that? There were over 900,000 signatures collected on the recall petition. It was organized by union representatives who were going to be greatly affected by the dismantling of collective bargaining rights and Democrats and Walker won that race by more votes than he got in the original one! I fail to understand how the Democrats were or are responsible for that failure to remove the one person who is most responsible for initiating, installing and overseeing the most damaging voter disenfranchisement in the state? People tried, but failed and Wisconsin voted this SOB back into office so he could continue to do this damage to voting rights. We, as voters, need to make sure before we go to the polls in Republican held states as well as any state, that we have our names on the voting rolls. It is that important because so many people are being removed for the very purpose of keeping you from voting. You have the right to ask for a provisional ballot in most states, and you need to know that. It has to start at the state level because that is where the problems lie. To equate this with Democrats is just false and not backed by facts. This is just an attempt to deflect from the very serious problem of voter disenfranchisement perpetrated by Republican legislatures across this country.

(1,265 posts)...some time back in the 90's. I mean, Ronald Reagan had a vision for this country. As a Democrat, I think his vision was profoundly wrong, but at least he had a vision. What was the Bush/Cheney vision beyond stuffing their own pockets and beating up on people that pissed them off?

(36,063 posts)Reveal that the young man pretty much did no homework before he visited the WI DOT.
You don't need a state issued ID to vote, other ID will work, but if you want a state issued ID for that purpose you absolutely must plan ahead and have supporting documents. Advocates for voting have been working on educating the public to this problem for years since the law was written, but people slip through that effort and show up without the documents that they need.
First, and perhaps foremost, WI' policy is to -MAIL- the IDs. Policy is you actually don't get them on the same day.
Next, to get your first WI issued ID (or driver's license) you to prove your identity, and provide proof of your date of birth, your US citizenship, and your WI residency. You also need to provide your social security number, which will be checked for validity.
I'm not sure whether a CA DL proof of US citizenship, birth date, or ssn, but it seems unlikely that a CA driver's license would show a current WI residential address, and that one issue would be enough to deny the application of the WI ID.

(18,818 posts)He could not just surrender his previous state ID to get one for WI without his birth certificate (from the 1930s, from SD). It took him several months to get what he needed from all locations. VOTER SUPPRESSION.
When I moved to WI from IL, all I did was surrender my IL DL for a WI DL. That was before the GOP got a stranglehold on our election process.
And no, we cannot just produce them at the DMV like we always used to...it has been outsourced to another state, because Walker is busy creating jobs in WI. Oh, wait a minute...
So if this young man could not produce his birth certificate, he could have had a military ID, a passport, or a tribal ID. Having none of those, his options are State issued DL and free State ID card...both of which have to be mailed. From out of state. VOTER SUPPRESSION
