Silver wings shining in the sunlight
Roaring engines headed somewhere in flight
They're taking you away, leaving me lonely
Silver wings slowly fading out of sight

This was an all-'round great performer. Even in a live recording, he knew how to run the show: great songs done well, with short, clear and concise seques and rather sharp histories, giving context to his socially conscious songs.

A great article about him -- with pieces about the new country "outlaws" -- in the latest issue of Garden & Guns magazine.

Go with Cash, Tubb, Horton and the other artists who wanted a better world.

He along with Buck Owen helped pioneer 'The Bakersfield Sound'.

Oh, but to have been a fly on the wall in in one of the beer joints back in the fifties and hear him play.

RIP, friend

He was often imitated, never quite duplicated.

He was in declining health for some time. Now he can rest.
