* Prince, who has died aged 57, broke all the fashion rules but, was able to pull off almost any outfit with panache
* One of his most memorable looks was undoubtedly the purple suit and ruffled shirt worn for hit song Purple Rain.

Standing just 5ft 2ins, his height was no bar to unique - and often bizarre - outifts and the singer lost no opportunity to thrill, shock or excite with his wardrobe, whether he was performing on stage or just attending an event as a guest.

He broke all the fashion rules yet with his flair, panache and individuality he pulled off any look he tried, whether it was a crop top, 18th century frock coat or a shimmering gold smock.

Prince celebrated his birthday in style with a pink and black halterneck trouser ensemble along with black lace sleeves covering his arms from the wrist to his biceps at the release of Purple Rain in Minneapolis, in January 1990. He also tamed his voluminous locks with a sequined bandana that doubled as a spangled eyepatch


In 1993 he took to the stage at New York's Radio City Hall wearing a police hat with chains covering his face, while singing into a microphone shaped like a gun. The wrap around red silk jacket matched the tight trousers and had bright yellow buttons - while the singer's new name of symbol was worn as a pendant around his neck
