For several weeks now I've had a rotting tooth causing me a lot of pain, but I've been out of work since the beginning of March, and I've used up what little I've been able to save for all these months of temp work. I'm down to my last $20 and last roll of toilet paper. I haven't been able to pay my landlord for four weeks now. Worse, the one temp agency where I'd been getting jobs since November hasn't had a damn thing for me. Of the eight of them I'm signed on with, they're one of two that has even been trying. Last week they had a job for me (another low pay idiot job, but so what) but they wouldn't give it to me because of this tooth. They won't give me ANY work until it comes out and I can give them a doctor's note that all is well.
The first thing I did when I finally figured out this pain was a tooth (it had been root canaled many years ago, and until recently I've not had any pain in or around the tooth) was call on the dental school in the city. This tooth has been a mess for a long time, and with most of it broken off and rotting away below the gum line they won't have a student do it. They'll do the work, but a regular oral surgeon will do it, and they want a lot more money than the private oral surgeon near me who pulled the last of my teeth for my upper denture. Even finding this out took over two weeks.
This has been a problem tooth for a very long time, and I've known for a few years that it isn't likely to come out in one piece which makes me scared to death of getting a dry socket. I've had that twice before in the distant past and NEVER want to go through that agony again. It's a possibility though. The gum has receded so much around that tooth I don't even think they could put in a stitch. But if there's still infection they won't anyway.
I've been on antibiotics for almost two weeks now, but they don't seem to be doing much of anything, and now my cheek is a little swollen in the area of this tooth. The antibiotics are also making a mess of my whole digestive tract.
My regular oral surgeon will do it ASAP as an emergency visit, but I HAVE to pay him first, and there just isn't any way other than begging for help to scrape up the money. It will cost at least $400 or $450 to get it out, and I don't know what else they might charge like for x-rays or whatever.
I so desperately need work and had hoped that any day I'd get something from one of these agencies but there's been NOTHING. They've sent me on a few interviews, but nothing ever came of them (these days you have to compete with their other temp workers and interview for temp jobs).
Please, please, if anyone can donate for me to get this damn tooth out and a little something for more antibiotics (I have only two days left of them, but I can get a refill) and some toilet paper, more Advil, gas for the car or whatever until I get money coming in again I will be so grateful. I've put off asking for help hoping a job would materialize, but it hasn't, and now the pain is so bad I don't think I could even fake my way through one. And now the only agency I've been getting any work from at all for months won't even talk to me until this tooth comes out and I'm "fit to work" again. Yoshi also has food for about 2 or 3 weeks and I have a little food stamp money left though it never gets me through the whole month.
I think my old gofundme account still works...

And my paypal is:
mytwowings@yahoo.com
Btw, my internet is shit since we switched to Xfinity, so I hope I'll still be able to get back in here. It's not been too bad the last few days since the wind has calmed down. Still, sometimes I just can't stay connected or it times out trying to get anywhere.
After all these weeks and weeks of nothing a job just HAS to come up soon for me!
Thank you a million times for any help anyone can offer!

At least this is true in the Minneapolis area and some of the dentists who do take it will want up front payment for what Medicaid doesn't cover. My nephew needed his (impacted) wisdom teeth pulled and while Medicaid would cover most of it, it wouldn't cover him being put under for the procedure. Given nephew's anxiety issues there was no way he could deal with this awake and those teeth had to come out. Thankfully, I could make up the difference.
I know of one dentist who does do a lot of probono work but had to limit the number of Medicaid patients he takes because he does need to at least break even.

My father was a surgeon and at some cocktail party this rich guy was complaining how much his appendectomy cost. My father said "Well, you could have just let it burst."
Of course going to the dentist or doctor is usually not an enjoyable experience ...so of course you don't want to pay for it. But the alternative is usually worse.
Healthcare should be expensive, y'know, because it requires specialists who train a lot, top of the line and up to date equipment and a lot of preparation and special circumstances. That's exactly why it should be single payer. Like a highway or a bridge or the electric grid, it's too much for the individual and needs collective funding and implementation.

Years ago I had my wisdom teeth taken out at the U of Minn's dental school. Because I wanted general anesthesia one of the oral surgery residents had to do the work, not a student (which is why, if you read my post above, I was willing to help my nephew with his wisdom teeth - no way was I going to be awake while 4 impacted teeth were dug out and I could empathize with him).
I did see students when it was simple procedure like a filing.

I would have saved a lot of money. I spent a fortune on crown, bridges & double bridges.
After this SOB dentist soaked me for all the above mentioned, he tried to charge me $2,100 for a lower plate. I said screw you and went to one of those discount place's and got them for $800 and a few months later I replaced the top plate that the asshole dentist made for $1500, for $500. He has food for the next few weeks, and I've been managing to walk him 3 times a day like usual though I have to go rather slow now because of the pain and stomach problems from the antibiotics. The last time I made a plea for him he was stolen from me along with his toys and a brand new bag of food - even his leash. I think about that horror every single day and always will. I also think about how it was a kind DUer that paid for that bag of food that was stolen.
As long as he can eat and get his walks he's very happy here. I think he likes it better here than where we were before... someone is usually always around so he isn't alone, a lot more people pet and play with him than just me, the crazy druggies aren't next door anymore, and there's actual grass here that he can lounge and roll around on.
I just need this tooth out and a job. I don't even care if it's another temp low pay idiot job like I've had for nearly a year now, but SOMETHING. Why I continually get the shit beat out of me here I don't know nor do I know why it hurts so damn much.

I got two seperate opinions, and it broke my heart. She was my doll baby. My protector and best friend. I posted this one from before she was ill because this is how I'll always remember her.
I've tried not answering in these threads because I didn't want my anger to pound through.
You're right, she DIDN'T socialize her dog. NEITHER of my babies would have attacked someone like that unless on command or if I were in extreme distress. These dogs are independent, smart, loyal. They are fierce protectors and unless raised properly with full socialization these situations like what happened with Ms and her former are beyond dangerous. Being loyal shouldn't mean being aggressive. Aggression comes from improper training.
I wanted to scream at the screen. I've actually gotten a little obsessive about this and went back through all the other threads to get the story straight as much as I could.

All you can do is point that out and let people decide for themselves what to do. Not harassment of the OP at all.
Some people's memories are pretty long so I'm kind of surprised TWW is back with a new variation on an old theme.

(3,702 posts)I have had way too much dental work and have had at least 6 root canals. Last year I had a lot of pain in a toThe, went to the dentist and it was a tooth that had a root canal..I assumed that because the root was gone, no pain.
Well a cavity formed underneath where the root canal was, in the little bit of tooth that was left and I ended up having to have it pulled. You can get an infection and abscess in the gums.
No idea what is going on with TTW, but just wanted to say that there is no limit apparently to things that can go wrong with teeth.

Won't the ER pull it? My understanding was that hospitals don't do dental care obviously but will do an extraction in extreme cases.
But how do the temp agencies even know you are going through this? I don't know how they can require a doctors note..it's not like you are contagious. That is just so weird. Unless maybe your face is really swollen and bruised, then seriously I can't see being able to find some dentist willing to work with you.

(2,978 posts)This is too, too familiar an approach, having seen it play out with addicts around here in real life (as well as by this poster on DU before)--always the complicated story, always how nothing else can help but actual cash. It reeks of desperation.
On the 1% chance this is genuine, I still think a person ought not to post such requests here more than once, hence TTW's request ought not to have been allowed. It makes it that more difficult for someone else who might be in genuine need to ever ask the community for help.
It's really sad to me to see good-hearted people on this thread donating to a person who has demonstrated before in great detail that they aren't operating in good faith. That money is better gone to so many other people with actual need. THOSE are the people who are hurt by this.
Very sad.

Oil of Oregano saved the teeth of someone I know that was told to have them all pulled out (which never happened as the oil of oregano KILLS the infection flat!).
Get some of this stuff as soon as you can! It is useful for many things and I heard about it on late night radio (KGO San Francisco in the good old days via
Ray Taliaferro who used to do the 1-5 a.m. slot for years -- a caller called in with the oil of oregano info.!).
If I was in your boat, this is what I'd do! It is not expensive (like less than $20).

I've done it before locally, helped a young lady get an extraction and one after care appt. Total $200 because it was broken.
I think it was something like 20 each for the visits, 85 for the extraction, 25 or so for the injection to numb her. I can't remember the totals verbatim but I do remember it came out to something like $200 or a little over.

You have a regular surgeon?
That's interesting. And just what state do you live in? Last time I think it was Ohio which is a state that has expanded medicare/medicaid which means that if you had signed up for that, as you should have (at no cost btw) you would be covered at no cost by medicaid.
I don't believe this plea is anything but a scam having been around the last time you claimed you were in trouble, which you may have been at that time but the way you responded to those who did come to help you makes me think you are not legit in this claim.
You should be on medicaid if your are that poor. Hell I'm on medicaid and have full medical, dental, vision coverage and my state came very late to the table on the expansion and I have a full time job in the summer months but nothing in winter. My income is around $15K annually and I am still covered whether I work year round or not. So I am thinking you are scamming us.

wherever she ended up, she was well within the income level of getting welfare of some sort and medicaid if that's available in her state. I just don't see how she can keep coming here and asking for help and then accusing those who do come to her aid of some off the wall crap.
Sounds like a person in need of something that money from strangers isn't going to help... it seems to enable more than anything.

Sadly, she did this with parents at a daycare. She scammed the fellow parents of children in my kid's day care. Not me, and it made me wonder why I was colder, but then I've had addicts in the family already. I couldn't believe how many people she took in.
Same schtick. I've known people who'd rather be on the street than ask for help on a web site. And if they did, they sure as hell wouldn't do it over and over and over again.

(14,061 posts)Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought at one time requests for money had to go through them for approval.
The way things are set up now it's just too easy to take advantage of people's better natures, and unfortunately, some are all too willing to do that.
These threads are disruptive and ultimately divisive and should not be allowed. That in and of itself merits a lock of these kinds of posts (especially from repeating requesters) and maybe a TOS, IMO.
Why that wasn't done last year is beyond me.
DU is not a social service clearinghouse nor (as you said) a bank or a charity.
This poster has a sketchy history here, and people need to remember that.
OneGrassRoot
(22,920 posts)Before DU3 (that's what this incarnation is called, right?) people had to get permission from the admins to post any request involving money. For a while I acted as the go-between with my site, Wishadoo!; I did my best to vet things before ever posting any requests for $$, with the help of other DUers.
When the admins changed the policy and said anyone can post requests, including those for money, I saw no need to continue to try to help. It became a free-for-all and a bit unwieldy. Plus, I needed to put things on hold anyway until I could get help as I was overwhelmed (lots of people beyond DU found their way to Wishadoo).
BTW, for the CC'ers reading, I never received any money for acting as the go-between; Wishadoo never got a cut whatsoever. That's the whole point of Wishadoo, that it's a direct connection, one-on-one.
It breaks my heart to see some of the things that have happened here especially over the last year. Next to primaries, this kind of thing does tear a community apart.

(15,224 posts)I'm certainly not a wealthy person, but I do give, and give generously when I can. I think each and every one of us has only to look outside our own front doors to find someone who needs help, so it's not like we are not compassionate people.
I have made it a policy that I don't contribute money to any of the "go fund me" types of sites. First of all, they take a portion of the proceeds which is unacceptable to me, personally, and second of all, I like to make sure that my dollars go to the legitimate issues. I'll call in money to a professional office, or donate food, etc., but I won't donate to these types of sites, and I wish pleas on DU would be properly vetted before being allowed to be posted.

To all who bother to read all the way to this post, TTW in the somewhat recent past has apparently admitted to having full dentures already: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10026851960#post10

SheilaT
(23,156 posts)here than there really is.
Or because so many people here defended her for so very long last year, she thinks it will be the same this time.
I took a huge amount of abuse last year from people who thought I was terrible, just terrible to keep track of her various threads, point out some of the more glaring discrepancies, and suggest people not send her a penny. Her very first post last year sort of took me in, although I wasn't about to send money. Then by the second thread I was quite suspicious, and by the third one her excuses, deflections, pretend helplessness, and pleas for money told me for sure she was scamming.
Notice, by the way, that she put up the OP, showed up a total of four more times in the thread, mostly to questions about Yoshi. No responses to actual good suggestions of free or very cheap care, or to pay directly to whoever would extract this tooth. Here's my prediction: she'll let this thread go on for a couple of more days, after which it will die a natural death. Then, in about three weeks she'll be back: her tooth problem has gotten vastly worse, she's got some systemic infection, practically at death's door herself, can't even manage to walk poor Yoshi, and will be in very, very desperate need of money sent to her immediately.
She probably has quite a few who've posted here on Ignore -- she apparently put me on Ignore in the middle of that amazing saga last year, so I feel free to post anything that's not actually defamatory, as she won't even see my posts.
ProudToBeBlueInRhody
(16,399 posts)She simply walks in here, like she's never done this before, and starts with the sob story.
SheilaT
(23,156 posts)being any kind of an expert on grifting, my take is that she's simply someone who does a short con, and therefore doesn't assess what's gone on before on the internet, who only knows that a particular kind of story is normally very effective. The chutzpah, as you so accurately named it, isn't in walking in here as if she's never done it before, but in a more global sense of having the chutzpah to start the grift in the first place.
I really wish that misanthrope and her husband were willing to give us more details on what exactly happened last year, when out of the genuine goodness of their hearts, they tried to rescue Yoshi and provide a better place for that dog. To begin with, the dog was not at all as advertised by TTW. Akitas can be problematical, and this particular one was definitely so. Then misanthrope and her husband tried to place Yoshi with an Akita rescue group (and I want to give a shout-out here to ALL rescue groups. I have a brother who does Irish Wolfhound rescue, and I understand the amazing things these groups do.) but TTW totally freaked out, accused misanthrope and her husband of stealing the dog, and things got very ugly. Misanthrope and hubby did NOT deserve the crap that TTW dumped on them.
TTW then went silent for a very long time, with occasional posts on various groups. Until two days ago when she showed up the the OP here, begging for help for her painful tooth. This, despite having not so long ago said that getting dentures was wonderful because of the relief from tooth problems. Various people in this thread have tried to micro-interpret TTW's various posts as showing that she has ONE denture (an upper or lower, not determined) from old posts, and are willing to give her a bit of a pass here. Personally, I won't give her a pass on anything.
And because I'm both a bit OCD and VERY detail oriented, I have all of the threads from last year that either she started, or someone else started in connection to her OMG! I'm going to be homeless! threads. Shall I post them?

(25,686 posts)My version of the next installment: she went to a dentist/surgeon and they screwed up (long rant about how stupid everyone is and how they're out to get her). Now her mouth is terribly infected and she needs antibiotics, another operation, and toilet paper. Send $. I wonder if the original plan was to do the tooth first and then some weeks later say she needs dentures (and toilet paper).

I, for one, would like to see these kinds of discussion threads banished from this forum. They should be IMing their DU friends with these pleas.

The downside of the otherwise excellent way to extract money from strangers online is that your words are all written down & can be retrieved, and contradictions identified. She has champions here who don't want to hear that, but I figure if you want to run a game on goodhearted people it ought to be a very good, a very plausible, game. We at least deserve that.

Strange, I know. Who ever has the opportunity to think deep thoughts about potatoes other than how to spell it and who in their right mind with bother? Ah... but I already said that I have never claimed to be in my right mind. Should you suggest that the psychiatric profession may take an interest in me, you may have something there... just dont suggest I seek their services for a full evaluation so that I can then claim one way or the other whether or not Im loopy so that youd be warned in advance unless you plan on paying for it... mmmkay?
Give her all your money and don't ask her to seek mental health services unless you plan on paying for it.

It just did not end well. Her "activism" consisted of viciously attacking anyone who disagreed with her on any point, even if they agreed with her in principal.
People are not "mean" when they invoke the adage (which my mother should have taught me for my own self-protection): Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
It's like with all other forms of abuse: The first order of business is to stop the abuse; only then can you go on to attempt to understand the poor widdle psyche of the abuser. Torch The Witch is a grifter -- she's abusing this community. I don't care what her underlying mental problems are at this point. She has made it abundantly clear long since that she will ignore every attempt to help that does not involve cash in her hand.

(109,006 posts)or ask their friends -- there is probably someone in need, whose circumstances are easily verifiable, who needs help just as much or more. For those who have money or resources they want to share.
In your case, you were geographically near her, so you weren't just sending money to an unknown person. But for most of us, TTW is just a name on a message board. And if we want to help someone we could probably do it more effectively if we just looked around our own neighborhoods, schools, churches, etc. for people in need.
Demit
(11,238 posts)There are so many people in need, and when they are without family & friends who can help, local organizations with their local knowledge, are in the best position to help.
I wondered at the time what the deal was with TTW's family. She was very vague about why they were so "horrible" to her and why she couldn't get help from them. Reading between the lines, you got the sense that she had been in financial trouble many times before, that they *had* tried to help her before, and now they were exasperated.
People's natural inclination is to help, I think, but we need to see that a person is making the effort to help themselves at the same time. That they are using our help as a springboard. Not using us as a source of income.

(90,865 posts)Last edited Tue May 3, 2016, 09:29 PM - Edit history (1)
TTW wrote a dramatic narrative of how alone she was, how nobody would help her (family and friends had bailed long since), her landlord was a hateful slumlord (but NO WAY was she going to move out, because reasons), the slumlord was going to evict her (I think largely because of the giant dog), she and her dog were going to be homeless soon, she wasn't feeling all that well, her loving delightful Akita was everything to her and wouldn't hurt a fly (but was "protective" and would attack anyone who entered without permission), she desperately needed to work but all that was available was "idiot work" (which she will not do), she needed food stamps and such but the social worker was a complete idiot and totally hostile and no help at all, the dog was in dire need of larger space, kibble, etc. etc. etc. Please send money.
So, many posts along the way, lots of advice from concerned DUers (rejected because reasons, but mostly never replied to), much concern from DU. Finally it transpired that Msanthrope and her ex-husband were within hailing distance. The ex has space in his home and he is good with dogs, so he says he will take Yoshi, the delightful Akita companion dog who is good with other animals and people who are not hostile.
In reality the Akita turned out to be socially maladjusted, tried to eat the cats, and tried to bite Mr Msanthrope. I am paraphrasing here, but do you get the gist?
It was decided by the Msanthropes that the dog would be better off at an Akita Rescue shelter, where its needs could be addressed in full, and that when TTW got back on her feet and into a place where she could live with Yoshi, she could retrieve him and neither of them would be homeless.
TTW went ballistic and, iirc, filed a police report for theft and tried to sue the people who tried to help her.
I am paraphrasing freely in some parts of this story, and it is incomplete as they did so much more to try to help, so it would be better if you would trawl through this thread and locate the links and read them. SheilaT has offered to PM her collection of links, as well.
Must go. Apologies to all for any inaccuracies.
Dorian Gray
(13,503 posts)What I was hoping for was her perspective on the abuses TTW heaped on her ex husband when he tried to help. How Yoshi ended up at a rescue. (I can actually see how that may panic TTW.) What kind of communication Msantrhope, her ex and TTW had. And what steps TTW took that were aggravating or abusive toward the people who helped her. That was not very publicly talked about.
It can be dangerous helping someone you don't know well, especially if they are suffering mental, emotional or substance abuse issues.

DU's records are a funny thing, if you know how to search them. They are an excellent aid to memory. After the donnybrook last August I bookmarked a couple of TTW threads for future reference, but I never saw the one about her dentures. This time I am bookmarking this thread as well.
She comes back every so often with a new story; all she wants is cash, not any other kind of assistance or advice, and she has proven to be dangerous to those who get involved in person. (I call an untrained Akita who threatens cats and humans dangerous, and a woman who files a police report on someone trying to help her likewise dangerous.)
My bet is she won't show up at PCIntern's office any time soon, and the story will be that her car broke down (send money) or her dog needs kibble (send money) or she can't use public transportation because of (reasons, but send money).
