A CSX freight train has derailed near the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station early Sunday morning, according to a D.C. fire department tweet.

D.C. Fire Fighters Local 36 said multiple cars have derailed, and they are leaking hazardous material. The incident happened shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday.

News4’s Mark Segraves reported the materials are chemicals. It is unknown specifically what type of chemicals are spilling.

Segraves said the derailment occurred in the 900 block of Rhode Island Avenue NE. He said several rail cars overturned, but there is no fire at this time.
