It's very hard to capture the experience in photography. There's an awful lot of nothing in all directions, and that itself is part of the beauty of the place. Some of the things I saw there I will never see again, like the area where three massive glaciers all meet in one spot.

4. Yep, "awful lot of nothing" must have been spectacular. Rough ocean looks scary, but beautiful.

In several places the ice plates had cracked and heaved up revealing the amazing turquoise color of the ice itself. They can only get ships in and out of the harbor for 6 weeks out of the year and even then they have to bring in icebreakers.

Bare lumber that had been used in the 50's to hold up various utilities was unpainted still looked new because wood doesn't rot there.

It was in June and the temps were just barely getting above freezing. The sun never set or even came close to setting the entire time, so 3am was just as bright as 3pm.

7. Sobering, but fascinating read. So similar to what's happening in Native American communities.

Indigenous populations left on their own to cope with rapid social displacement and loss of cultural identity.
