Congress Likely To Get Its Only Openly Atheist Member In November

Jamie Raskin doesn’t hide his belief that people can lead ethical lives without fearing God.

Raskin is perhaps best known in nontheist circles for testimony he gave in 2006 in favor of marriage equality in Maryland, when he reminded a state senator that lawmakers “place their hand on the Bible and swear to uphold the Constitution. They don’t put their hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible.”

He is a tremendous individual whose public works have been substantial in his district.

Concerning the headline, I seriously doubt that there aren't many members of Congress and the Senate that don't really believe in the religions they profess. While only a god can know what resides in a person's heart, we humans know many of these people by their actions.

...should be a religious test for holding office in this country. Only atheists and agnostics allowed - there would be no theocratic agenda hell bent on butting into people's private lives.
