You asked for donations in your current thread regarding the tooth that's been giving you a problem. I'd like to help you but first I would like to know if this is a legitimate request.
I have donated in the past but I made sure before I parted with my money that the need was real. (Think Andy Stephenson)---I think most DU members feel the same way.
It appears that many DUers do not believe you when you post threads asking for donations. You've posted quite a few over the last couple of years and some have appeared questionable.
I would like to give you the benefit of the doubt with this recent call for help and this is how I propose to do it.
Work with me to prove that you have an Oral Surgeon at the ready by allowing me to speak with his or her Office Manager or Admin Assistant. If I am convinced that all is legit---- I will ask if I and others can help pay for your procedure.
Again...if I am going to part with my hard earned money, I do not believe that this is to much to ask.
PS: for those who pop in on this thread to say she is a con artist....let's give her a chance to see how she responds.

(20,582 posts)Two threads now.
Some of us have already given and we didn't need her private information. If you don't believe her, don't donate. She owes you absolutely nothing. If the Admins don't want her post here, they'll remove it. Just leave her the f* alone.

if you want to give money to people in need there are a lot of places it could go but i won't give money to someone that bragged about using money for tp
there are a lot of wonderful DU members and i hate to see them get used

(17,240 posts)What people posted TEN fucking years ago has no bearing on the current situation.
I'm shocked that you don't get that!

(31,997 posts)this person constantly begging for money and rejecting all forms of help after previously bragging about using money as tp
that was my point.

(31,997 posts)i am not bullying. i would give to those in real need
we did just last month and i brought a specific need and a real problem to du and many people stepped up to the plate. one of my students killed himself and his family had no funds to bury him. a lot of us gave. it was a real need.
this ttw stuff comes up all the time taking away from those with serious real needs.
so when someone brags about wiping their bum with 10 bucks then regularly grifts for money with elaborate unbelievable stories i just try to point them out.
du has helped me when i started my blankets for ronnie project. that was legitimate. ttw-i don't feel is legitimate

(31,997 posts)i can't find it now but somewhere today i read where she was complaining about the paste/glue not fitting and how her dentures felt like they were made for someone two sizes different
but i am not sweating it. i got a hide on the other thread for mentioning something she said. i was called sexist so i guess a female calling out another female is misogyny
grifting takes work i guess..

"Going without teeth is horrible and so embarrassing. The lab that did my temporary denture that I was supposed to be able to wear immediately after the last tooth stubs were removed..."
DU is being played, but I get the impression (har, har) that the vast majority of DU knows it.

(8,175 posts)For one thing, if you give money to someone in need, it's not yours anymore to question how they use it. If you can't give it freely, then just don't give.
For another thing, she is being called out for a previous thread on her having dentures. but nowhere in that thread does she say dentures. She says denture over and over. So maybe she only has denture on the top or bottom, but not both? Do you know? Is it your business to know?
What someone said above is the truth here. If you feel comfortable enough to donate, then do so. lf you don't...then just don't and stay the hell out of it. You don't know this person, right? How about until you have proof that they are trying to scam someone, you just STFU?
To me this is like someone saying they won't give money to beggars on the street because they might spend it on alcohol.
WTF does it matter if they do? If they need it because they are an alcoholic, then it's up to you whether or not you want to help them...but don't not give because you are afraid of how it is used. If they are an alcoholic, their life is miserable without it, and in the winter alcohol helps people sleeping on the street stay warmer. And it is a source of sugar (nutrition).
Don't give if you don't want to. It's your choice. But don't denigrate those asking for help unless you have proof they are scammers.

(20,582 posts)Regardless, we all know she's had money and serious health problems for a long time as well as being unemployed while not feeling well, yet still trying. No-one would come here to plead for help knowing this kind of bullying will follow, unless they're desperate.

If you have a problem with TorchtheWitch take it up with the Admins or just trash the post that made you make this an OP --
Or maybe just put that poster on ignore.

(13,850 posts)but this is bullying. He KNOWS she'll refuse to do this. It's another way to prove she's a liar.
I have never given money to TTW. I think she's seriously troubled, and I think her posts asking for money should be removed at this point.
But there is no need to mock or bully her.
She may be seriously troubled, have an addiction, or be a flat out grifter. (I believe it's one of the first two options.) We can't control what she posts, but we can control our response to it. You don't have to give, you can warn of the problem, and still be kind.

(14,912 posts)to help them clear things up with their question. I am all for transparency when you come on here asking other members to give you a hand UP, not a hand OUT, and if you are unwilling to answer questions/concerns, maybe you AREN'T being legitimate, and just playing on the sympathies of the wonderful people here.
For the record, it wasn't the OP of THIS thread who started the questioning, but he did jump in on it... You can read it from here http://www.democraticunderground.com/10027727731#post4 and go down to see how *I* handled it.
I already got another vehicle, thanks to my family members and the awesome people here, but I am still struggling until the 3rd when I get paid again. I had a couple of family members ask me to keep the account open until they got paid this month, but I am going to shut it down by May 6th if they have not come through. I figure that they should have their bills paid by then, and already know what they have left over to spare.
I already know what all of my bills are for the month, and will be spending the 3rd online paying them... and I will have less than $250 left for the month, but I will make due with what I have.
I agree, though... if a person is going to give up their hard earned money to help someone else, they should KNOW that it is legitimate. This isn't the same as handing a panhandler a couple of bucks, or even $10-$20. I've done that many times, KNOWING that they were going to spend it on alcohol or drugs.... then again, they COULD be getting a motel room for the night just to get a shower, and have a bed to sleep in!
Peace,
Ghost

SheilaT
(23,156 posts)begging for money that went on for more than six months last year?
It was a totally epic saga, and if you missed it you really need to read it. It's right up there with the poster last year who had a door buzzard.

(20,384 posts)Doesn't excuse the calling out of a fellow member, and doing so directly in an OP no less.
You have a problem with a fellow member's post, alert or take it to Admin. This tactic makes DU suck.

(23,156 posts)she posts yet another dodgy OP begging for money?
I happen to think people should know her history.

(20,384 posts)You are to be applauded for the countless hours you must have spent digging into TTW's life in order to provide an accurate account so that "people" can know her "history", because I'm certain that someone as dedicated to providing information would not merely rely on some random internet postings. So bravo and well done!

(2,044 posts)You get a false distinction between deserving and undeserving poor. This was covered in JB Priestley's An Inspector Calls. Mrs. Birling the head of a charity actually condemns the girl her son got pregnant, and her own grandchild to death.

It also allows charlatans and hucksters to step in. I know nothing about TorchtheWitch, but I've only once donated to an individual I've met online. It was someone I'd talked to for over five years and another poster told us of her dire circumstances.
