Malias parents both attended Harvard Law after matriculating at Princeton (Michelle) and Columbia (Barack) but Malia was considering several other Ivy League schools. She visited many on the East Coast last year, causing months of speculation on which she would choose.
As the child of a President, Malia was unquestionably at an advantage when it came to choosing a college. But she is not alone. Many presidential children attended prestigious colleges like Yale (Barbara Pierce Bush), Radcliffe (Caroline Kennedy) and Stanford (Chelsea Clinton). Twenty-three presidential children attended Harvard. Malia is in good company.
Of course, the racists and other nasty haters took to social media to insult Malia and her family. The ignorant bigots proved to the world just how low they can go.
I thought children were off limits

I guess that only applies to Bush's two drunken daughters.

(37,748 posts)The implication, lacking any supporting evidence is that she did not earn her spot academically. No doubt that same avarice, cowering behind implication would have us believe Amy Carter did not earn her Master's from Tulane as it was simply 'given' to her due to family name.

Malia is a lovely, classy young lady.

(6,356 posts)Did she get a boost because of her last name, maybe...but consider the broader picture.
Kid from a great school with a super educational track record.
Parents who are both smart as all get out. If she's half as smart, she's doing great (and if she's like my kids, she's probably twice as smart as her parents).
She probably works her a$$ off because of the societal pressure to do well (imagine if she had some of the escapades reported of the Bush twins).
Losers are slamming on her because she's a smart, capable, black woman. They're the kind of people who probably yell "privilege" at every smart, capable, black woman who succeeds because all they see is the black...they're too f'ing stupid to see the smart, capable part.
If she got any boost because of her last name, it was probably from being the 10th choice to being the 8th choice (I made those numbers up). It sure wasn't a boost from the "declined" to the "accepted" group.
I can't wait to see what the next 10-20 years brings for Malia. I have this feeling she's going to be a "change the world" kind of person.

(1,368 posts)Think you for sticking to the topic and not getting in the hate/hate mode!!!
And Harvard is indeed a good choice for her, as well as taking a Gap year! She is a delightful young lady, and is about to start her journey of self discovery, and that's where the focus should be!
Ho!
