He was extremely conservative on military and economic matters, but pretty libertarian on social issues. Most noteworthy was his acceptance 5 decades ago of gays serving in the military. He said "I don't care if someone is straight as long as they can shoot straight."
I feel pretty sure he would despise both Trump and Cruz.

10. Yup. Good conservatives have refused to run for

a long time now, which combined with unlimited dirty money has sent an already severely troubled party into an extended death spiral. This election started with, what, 17 very hard-core to extremist conservatives, and now the GOP electorate has winnowed them down to the two most dysfunctional and malignantly extreme.
