Carolina In The Pines lyrics: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/m/michael_martin_murphey/carolina_in_the_pines.html
It was early. Marta was still asleep. We haven't seen mom and the twins since last October. I took a couple quick photos. I wondered if she would remember me. I went over to her slowly. She stepped back a few feet. I held out some bread. She walked right back up and ate right out of my hand. She did remember me.
I put down corn, bread, and critter crunch for the three of them.
The twins still won't get very close. That is a good thing. Because the deer population is out of control here, they allow bow hunting in the area in the fall.
Still no hummingbirds, but they are in the area: http://www.hummingbirds.net/map.html

(8,850 posts)I didn't take the photos, Andrew in our office did.
I took some videos but with no real zoom capability it's not impressive enough to post.
What amazes me is that the birds grow so fast.
From hatched to flying took about 21 - 25 days.
You see these little heads with oversized eye sockets, one day, and in 2 weeks
you see them back-to-back, then a week later they're testing their wings, and
finally fleeing the coup.
It's like they got their drivers license.
They go from infant to teenager right before your eyes, FAST!

(28,088 posts)I was taking my dog down a path to the lake a few months ago and there, at the water's edge, laid a poor dead deer with a bow in its neck. It shook me. It could have been one of the ones I had fed.
My neighbors reported me for feeding them.
My mother's neighbor bow hunts but they are truly on hard times and eat the deer the son kills. That's more acceptable to me.
Hope you see your hummingbird soon.

(1,328 posts)You see them sitting there with mutilated dead animals grinning like a fool.
Remember co-worker once was telling about her husband a cop, who brought home a dead bird and she asked him why he killed It, cause it was so beautiful. Bet it was more beautiful, alive. Also said the only time he smiled was when he was posing with a dead dear.

(10,489 posts)I didn't really think many people knew of the song. Most people only know his song Wildfire, and they have to be of a certain age usually to know that!

There's been a hoot owl howling by my window now for six nights in a row
She's coming for me, I know
And on Wildfire, we're both gonna go

I was taking nature pix in the yard, and then it happened

I went out to take a few photos of the baby squirrel eating bread I put out. S/he comes up within a couple feet and begs. I was over by the sun flower chip feeder when this female hummingbird showed up. I took a few photos of her and figured that was it. I went over to check the jelly feeder. That is when it happened. She landed on my head and just watched what I was doing. I had the camera around my neck. But there is no way to take a photo of this type with the camera we have.
Here she is.
