This is really happening, people. Either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump is going to be the next president of the United States.
Just saying it still feels strange, but then again, pretty much everything about this most shocking and chaotic of election seasons has been deeply surreal. Clinton is a heavy favorite to beat Trump, but the journalistic graveyard is littered with the bones of columnists who are now being forced to literally eat their incorrect words about the 2016 campaign, so Id be a fool to say I was completely sure about that. But I am sure of one thing: The general election we are now all going to endure together will be a horrible, horrible experience.
How horrible? Let us count the ways.
First, it will be unrelentingly nasty. Trump is a neo-fascist thug whose hatred of women courses through every vein in his body, and who has already promised to make his fight with Clinton very personal. Clintons penchant for bare-knuckle political brawling goes back to the very first years of her life in politics, andin sharp contrast to her bout with the comparatively cuddly Bernie Sandersa huge number of voters will be begging her to hit Trump with everything shes got. And thats before you get to the Super PACs and other outside groups from both parties who will blanket the country with attacks. We will drown in the flood of viciousness that awaits us.

(14,169 posts)It would have gone better with Bernie vs Trump
Not that I would want Bernie to let up. He should fire on all cylinders as well. There is so much material to use.
But going the other way? The only card Trump would have is the "evil socialist" card. And after months of campaigning, Bernie has the lowest negativity numbers of all of them, and he has not been shy about proclaiming himself a democratic socialist. And especially if he ever had the chance to speak to even more of the nation to explain exactly what democratic socialism would mean to the every day lives of Americans. It would be a rich capitalist welfare bum with a nasty mouth vs. a nice guy, and someone who's popularity rests with his call for the wealthy to pay more. If that is the only issue Trump can use on him, then Bernie will come out on top.
Ms. Clinton has waaaaaaaaaaay more material for the Don to use both real and other "scandals" that are already burnt into a lot of minds as being real. He could highlight a new one every week.

(53,866 posts)No matter who we put up against trump this would get nasty. Just because I'm not blinded by hatred for Hillary doesn't mean I'm talking shit about Bernie.
In this particular instance I was def not criticizing Bernie, just the author of the article and the op for pretending that this nastiness had anything to do with Hillary.
So no you are wrong

(14,881 posts)assuming that JW doesn't deliberately drag it out until after the convention.
Trump doesn't need to go all misogynist on Clinton. Between the FBI investigation and discovery in 2 FOIA lawsuits, he has plenty of fodder to "indict" her with.
sharp_stick
(14,400 posts)I look forward to the many many conspiracy threads that follow the FBI deciding against charges.
That being said there is no way the pukes and their many friends will ever stop making stuff up to hold these so important hearings rather than actually doing some work.

(14,881 posts)Judge Emmet Sullivan of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia laid out the ground rules for interviewing multiple State Department officials about the emails, with an eye toward finishing the depositions in the weeks before the party nominating conventions.
Based on information learned during discovery, the deposition of Mrs. Clinton may be necessary, Sullivan said in an order on Wednesday.
In his order, Sullivan pointed to revelations from the emails appearing to show officials trying to evade demands of FOIA.
In one email, for instance, Mull told Abedin that Clintons emails would be subject to FOIA requests if she used a department-issued BlackBerry, even though her identity would remain secret.
Abedin responded that the idea doesnt make a whole lot of sense.

(14,881 posts)Sullivan's latest ruling makes it clear that if and when JW asks, he will order it.
sharp_stick
(14,400 posts)that one word makes all the difference in the world. If he does order it you can bet everything that her legal team will start filing to block that deposition, probably citing the ongoing FBI investigation.

(9,304 posts)IF the plaintiffs ask him... and IF he overrules objections from Hillary's legal team... he may or may not order Hillary's deposition... in which she will have the opportunity to put issues which she is intimately familiar with in the perspective that favors her...
yep, she is soooo finished!

(57 posts)It's time we all stopped whining about what is and focused our energy on what might be - let's find out what the down-ticket Democrats believe in and get the ones who share our belief system elected. Then let's set about getting ourselves organized so that we can cripple obstructionists by tying up their phone lines, their email, their offices, not just for hours but for days, weeks, months, years if necessary. If ours is to be a grassroots movement, we've got to work together to get things done despite what D.C.'s agenda might be.

(10,123 posts)Sure, a so-called Democrat who is really Republican-lite and would go completely right wing if it got her more votes is "better" than the ignorant, racist Trump. Having said that, Trump is not as far right as many in the GOP - though he is a little crazy.
But neither of them are good enough for the job as President of the United States in my opinion. And it's not close.
Both lie their heads off. Both are likely to get us into a war. Both represent the 1%. Clinton does not represent real change. Trump probably represents change we won't like.
America loses either way - just a little less with Clinton than Trump.
America deserves better.
