Activist deemed a hero in Sweden for 'iconic' defiant gesture in front of fascist marchhttp://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3571113/The-moment-one-brave-woman-stands-300-Nazis-refuses-let-pass-Activist-s-defiant-gesture-fascist-march-Sweden.html
The photograph was taken in Borlange, Dalarna, in central Sweden, where the militant Nazi organisation Nordiska motståndsrörelsen (Nordic Resistance Movement) was holding a rally on International Workers' Day this weekend.
As hundreds of right-wing extremists, dressed in homemade uniforms of white shirts and dark green ties, marched down the street, 42-year-old Tess Asplund stood in their way and faced the group's leaders with her arm in the air.
The photograph of her brave and defiant action has been shared by thousands of Scandinavians on Twitter and Facebook, and the snap is already being hailed as an iconic moment in modern Swedish history.
Fierce!

(16,799 posts)was gonna say if given the opportunity but facing a bunch of nazis is not my idea of an opportunity......
It saddens me to think how many people, many of them my relatives, could have been saved had more people shown this kind of courage.

(1,178 posts)when Hitler was starting his revolt. The trick is to stand up to them before they take over the military. I know you, like me, are watching that same inflection point here, right now. We will see whether Americans can tear themselves away from reality tv and competing to see who pushes the most expensive baby carriage to stop the impending train wreck.

(10,597 posts)You go girl! She looked into the faces of 300 evil SOBan Nazis and said "EFF youz, you SOBs!" If I was standing over there on the side of the street, I would have joined her.
Thank you. That's about the extent of my Swedish, though.

(6,342 posts)And most of the ugly comments are NOT from America. If you think America has a total monopoly on racism, go read that comment section. At least 80% are critical of the woman.

(6,241 posts)The worst parts of this woman are so much better than the best parts of those 3 men. She's a hero. She's an inspiration. True courage, standing up to their cowardice.

(29,503 posts)Vanessa Redgrave won the Oscar that year for her riveting performance of a woman who fought the Nazis personally in defense of her Jewish friends.
The film's story is likely fictional despite being billed as biographical, and of course as many know, Vanessa Redgrave, the actress, is uncompromising when it comes to her politics, but despite those things, I found the film inspiring, and when I see current events, I applaud seeing everyday people stand up to fascism despite the risks of personal harm.
