And fuck appealing to Republicans.
Don't fuck up the down ticket races. The head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Rep. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, has the right idea in going after incumbent Republicans: "Were going to make sure theyre tied to Donald Trump, and Donald Trump is tied to them." In some cases, that's gonna be easy. Incumbent Republican Tom Reed of New York endorsed Trump in March; he barely squeaked to victory in 2012 (2014 was an easier election for him). He's up against a Democrat, John Plumb, whose family has deep roots in the upstate NY region (Reed is from Illinois) and is a Navy veteran who supports a woman's right to choose and wants to do something to slow climate change. Throw shit-tons of money at that guy.
Trump is gonna be doing everything possible to throw a wrench into the Democratic election train engine. He will likely pick a woman as a running mate to stave off criticism of his sexism, thinking that it'll trick some women into abandoning Clinton (who, let's face it, whether we like it or not, is almost certainly going to be the Democratic nominee). He has to be hit hard and continuously, not with milquetoast policy disputes, but with barrages of deeply personal insults that put him on the defensive. Keep him on the ropes constantly because if there's one thing this fucker has proven is that he can throw a punch.
...
P.S. Oh, and regular Democratic voters who say they won't vote if Hillary's the nominee? That'll fuck it up, too.

(751 posts)You can't come with weak sauce. I suspect the Hillary campaign is going to try to stay out of the fray and pretend to be the adult in the room. I'm guessing they will try to appeal to GOP voters (elite establishment) who find to unpredictable and in return not be too nasty to the GOP. Jeb tried that and guess what happened to him?
Even if they had the right game plan, is someone like Hillary going to be able to execute it? I'm huge Bernie supporter, but I think Hillary is the worst candidate for this election. Any other Dem candidate, the house/senate/presidency would all be in Dems hands. If Hillary at the top of the ticket, we will be lucky to get the presidency.
She is the Republican Anti-Christ, they will not support her no matter what she does. In actuality she's the best get out the vote gift that the Republican party could have asked for.

(4,213 posts)I think the Democrats in general are going to be stupid, and try and appeal to GOP Voters who don't like Trump. Instead they should be doing everything in their power to associate the Republican Party with Trump, and every Republican running for office--from the local dogcatcher to the Senate--with Trump and Trumpism. They should have to defend every insane and offensive remark that falls out of his mouth.
However, I do believe that Hillary will be more aggressive in going after Trump than Bernie Sanders. Hillary Clinton is vicious as fuck. Once she wins the primary, she is going to be within arms reach of her long awaited ambition. She'll crucify anyone who stands in her way, and she won't have to play nicey-nicey like she is doing with Bernie Sanders--because she is trying her best to NOT to alienate his supporters.
Bernie Sanders, on the other hand, is the candidate of lofty ideals. He hates running negative campaigns--he brags about having never run a negative campaign before. What we are about to witness is going to be one of the ugliest, most brutal, most down-in-the-gutter campaign in American history. It's going to make Jefferson vs Adams look like a Hippie Peace Circle by comparison. Bernie Sanders does not have the temperament nor the desire to engage in that type of campaign--he's said so himself.

(1,388 posts)Our candidate needs to stay on the issues. Call out the dope on policy. Surgates should stoop as low as possible. If Hillary Clinton does get the nomination, she has to work really hard to get people like me to be as excited about her as I am about Bernie. The only excitement is coming from the Bernie camp. If we turn out, we win. Candidate please rip on the progressive issues. Surgates get in the mud.

(101,311 posts)The system has given us SuperPACs. Ours need to relentlessly tear into Trump as an unstable nut, who spouts crap about anything, like being a birther, and is so gullible he just believes the first thing he reads on the internet. Add in his con job with 'Trump University', his long-standing racism against blacks (stretching back to the 70s), his hatred of Hispanics, and his disdain for women, and the ammunition is there.

(62,521 posts)"Counter that with anti-Trump personality, anti-stupid. Degrade, deride, and dismiss."
this is unlike any other election ever in our life times.
trump gets his votes exactly on the way he acts.
he is appealing to the ignorant who lives, breaths and thrives on anything that makes anyone smarter than they are look stupid.
they aren't looking for someone with "experience" they aren't looking for someone who will tell them reality or facts with a calm demeanor.
they want blood, they want swearing, they want violence, they want rage.
trying to look smart as a counter to trumps stupid baiting will only piss off his base that much more and attract the other fence sitting repukes.
because the one thing repukes want right now, is a winner. And no matter how crazy trump is, he is the antithesis of all things Dem/hillary. and they will rally around him, mark my words. they will fall in line.
watch as the message from the gop suddenly goes from distain, yesterday, to full on acceptance tomorrow. Sure there will be hold outs, but they will be silenced and sidelined.
I can tell you right now, trump is hoping with ever ounce of his being that the Dems/hillary come at him from the high ground.
that's his strength, tearing down the the authoritative imagery.
this is a street fight and if hillary isn't ready and tries to play the upper hand, she will lose.

(24,692 posts)We don't have or need a demagogue. We may have to offer an alternative to voters that differentiates us from the blustering demagogue.
We need a 'high energy' focused campaign (since we know Donald likes to cast opponents as 'low-energy losers') that points out the differences between their racist, misogynist, isolationist candidate and ours.
Trump will be a dangerous campaigner and should not be underestimated. He will not be defeated by polite policy discussions, though we need to use the campaign to educate the public on the downside of his bigoted policy ideas. He knows how to turn policy discussions into juvenile shouting matches and name-calling.
Blustering RW demagogues have to be resisted forcefully without becoming what we are resisting. The best we can do is to give the voters a real choice offering distinct policies, personalities and competence.

(62,521 posts)but this election and the type of stupidity that trump is displaying is apparently attracting the right wingers to him.
Mark my words, the repubs will circle the wagons soon enough and will suddenly come out in full support of him.
taking the high road won't work as effectively as you might think.
this is going to get very very ugly.
jwirr
(39,215 posts)of what we do or say. "The high road", speaking about the real issues is for people who want to know about the ideas of the candidate they are going to vote for. There is a huge group of those voters in Bernie supporters and to a lesser degree in Hillary's voters.
If this election descends into a mud bath with no real content regarding the future many will just stay home assuming that there is no one worth voting for.
Look what Bernie has accomplished with issues based campaigning. He came from near nothing to neck and neck with Hillary who had a great many advantages when she started.
The cesspool is no place for a true Democrat.

(785 posts)And how many times have the Dems listened and took the advice? Yeah. That's the same null set I get. Think about what they did to Gore and Kerry and what they tried to do to Obama during elections and the level of disrespect and contempt they treated him with since. Think about the hypocritical double standard and hate they have directed at Hillary for 24 years and to Democratic candidates in just about every House and Senate race.
The Republicans ignore their own transgressions and verbally batter us while we try to take and hold the high ground. They link us to child molesters, call us weaklings, cowards, deadbeats and sponges, invoke death panels and accuse of butchering fetuses and selling them like beef with our thumb on the scale. They call us cheaters, crybabies, pointed headed intellectuals and threaten to bomb or shoot us. They have run away with local and state governance with blatant gerrymandering and systematic vote suppression. They control almost the entire AM and FM bands and fill every talk show slot with lies and non stop hate mongering against liberals and progressive causes. They poisoned an entire city in Michigan. They are willing to let people die without insurance, freeze without heat and go without food. They don't care who gets hurt and they are getting behind one of the biggest, dumbest, meanest assholes to ever run for the Presidency.
We keep waiting for cooler heads to prevail but they just roll down into a crate next to their guillotine. I think it is more than OK to take the gloves off now and let our "esteemed colleagues from across the aisle" get a metaphorical knuckle sandwich right in the teeth every chance we can. This is a blood sport. They made it that way. I want to see candidates wearing some Republican blood on their jerseys.

(30,613 posts)Yes, please. Republicans hate Hillary, unconditionally. No matter how far to the right she is, they will always hate her. 25 years of talk radio crap won't be overcome, ever. Hillary (if she ends up as nominee) needs to court the people she has some tiny chance of winning: those in the center and the left. Though she is to the right of center herself, at least she is to the left of most incumbents in the Potty Party.
