Do you know what Cinco de Mayo is actually about?

If not, a nice short explanation can be found here , by one of Juanita Jean's folks:

Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates Mexico winning the battle of Puebla in the 1860s over the French Army, which had not lost a battle since Napoleon. Unfortunately, they lost the war, so not many people in Mexico actually celebrate it.

He did not fight for the confederacy, but he got there in time to be on the losing end of a war.

The Battle of Puebla ensured the Mexican-French war would not be an easy victory for the French. Their original plan was to link up with Confederate forces in the United States after what they assumed would be a quick win in Mexico.

I am amazed at how very old places are along the Gulf Coast/Lower South, thanks to Spain and France fighting over territory here.
so lots of French influence, and some spanish, esp. St. Augustine and the coast of Fla.
