NIU moving to rescind Hastert's honorary doctorate
DeKALB – Northern Illinois University is moving a step closer to stripping disgraced U.S. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert of the honorary doctorate it gave him, after a university committee this week made the formal request.
NIU gave him the honorary Doctor of Laws in 1999.
“Mr. Hastert’s recent felony conviction for fraudulent banking transactions, as well as the testimony about his participation in sexual abuse of children offered during sentencing proceedings, constitute incontrovertible evidence that he has acted in ways that do not reflect the values of the institution,” read a written statement issued this week by the NIU Graduate Council’s Honorary Degree Committee.
