I am real good at benign neglect gardening.

(9,033 posts)an amazing and long rainy season and our early flowering trees (primavera, jacaranda, flamboyant) really responded--spectacular!
Right now is the hottest time of the year so I'm just praying for rain and cooler weather.

What lovely blooms!

(8,175 posts)Do you have to stake them up to keep them upright?
I just found out there are grow-through wire stands that work for peonies. My peonies are not the bush type. I think they would work for tomatoes too, and are more attractive than tomato cages, but they are pretty expensive. And I don't think they would work with plants with leaves like iris and gladiola.
the one time I tried growing gladiolas, they were always laying on the ground when the flowers were in full bloom. I've had the same problem with some of the fancy iris too.

That photo is not of mine but the ones blooming first are the same lovely colors.
Mom loved glads - thrilled that they started blooming just before Mothers' Day.

(9,033 posts)My favorites were some called Grape Soda: variegated green and gold leaves, purple flowers and the scent of (surprise!) grape soda...fun stuff.

(58,785 posts)la Duchesse du Brabant and (translation) Tipsy Imperial Concubine are past, in the U.S., anyway. Want some funny plant reading, try plantdelights.com. Names like gooey 'Susy Sweetheart' and sterile "red groundcover rose" caused the owner major revulsion, leading to names like hostas 'Elvis Lives' and 'Out House Delight.' Others, like black and blue Salvia 'Domestic Violence,' cause their own revulsion (some people have no sense of humor).
They have a rants section for e-mails they think others might like to read. Compared to DU, though, even the occasional accusation of being a fascist turd or wild-eyed liberal is pretty mild. But the real fun is in some of the essays hidden somewhere on the site; it's been a while since I browsed and stumbled on one.
"Out House Delight (the ugliest hosta in the history of hostas), not currently available"
(Hosta collectors will buy anything. I'm sure it sold like hotcakes for a while.)

(17,505 posts)But early....oh wait, you're much farther south!
I have daylilies just starting, and irises
If you've got a sunny place, daylilies are the best, and easiest things to grow ever. And they come in many different forms than just your average ditch lily. This is one called Tutankhamen.

Poppies and Batchelder buttons are starting to open. Usually they wait for June.
