"He can't be that ignorant, can he?"

JOE SCARBOROUGH (CO-HOST): What are we Mike, Argentina? Greece? That's a baffling suggestion.

MIKE BARNICLE: After he said that, toward the end of last week, I spoke with a guy who was a fairly significant player on Wall Street. And here's the quote about Donald Trump, in reference to what Donald Trump said. "He can't be that ignorant, can he?"

SCARBOROUGH: You mean about defaulting on the debt?

BARNICLE: Yeah. Yeah. But he also said, with George Stephanopoulos yesterday, it was kind of interesting, that all of these proposals that he’s throwing out there, that it’s a concept. Now, I think people probably get concept, the concept aspect, when he’s talking about negotiating the tax plan with Congress. But as Andrea just raised, what does he do about the Muslim ban, what does he do about the wall? Those are a little bit more than concepts. Is he going to walk back on those too?

MIKA BRZEZINSKI (CO-HOST): Well, there's those concepts to deal with, now that we're facing the general. But then these things that have come up. And I'm going to point to something you said casually on the phone yesterday, we were trying to figure this out. It's almost like he's trying to sabotage this. Gene, does he really want this?

SCARBOROUGH: Does he want to win the election? Because he's not acted over the past week like a man who wants to win the election.

BRZEZINSKI: It's as if he's trying to kill it.

MIKE BARNICLE: That's a good question.

EUGENE ROBINSON: Yeah, he wants to win the election.

BRZEZINSKI: Are you sure?

ROBINSON: Well how can I be sure? But no, I believe he wants to win the election. I believe he wants to win the election his way. I believe he thinks, and this is delusional in my view, but he thinks that he has brilliantly strategized his way to this point. To essentially a hostile takeover of the Republican Party.

BRZEZINSKI: He has.

ROBINSON: And he's going to keep going forward, his way, which involves zig-zagging on positions and saying outrageous things and sticking to the Muslim ban, and sticking to the wall and all these, frankly, crazy things. What he said about the debt is just absolutely insane.

SCARBOROUGH: It's insanity. (MSNBC, Morning Joe, 5/9/16]

Trump will not be able to continue zig-zagging his way through the GE cycle without being pressed hard about his outrageous positions and at some point he's going to lose it and become unhinged with no way to walk it back.
