10 Ways Your Social Justice Work Might Be Inaccessible and Elitist (And Why That’s a Problem)

http://everydayfeminism.com/2016/05/inaccessible-elitist-activism/

I’m an artist first. But I decided long ago that my art would be in the service of fighting oppression.

Since then, I’ve waded more deeply into social justice spaces, and I find myself surrounded more and more by people professing these same aspirations....

But some of those ways are too insidious to recognize even within these spaces. Some are, in fact, unique to these spaces. Some oppressions are fostered by the very things supposedly set up to help justice spaces thrive. Inadvertently, they create power structures mirroring those they’re working to address.

Being in these spaces for a while now, I’ve noticed that I’ve been increasingly receiving feedback that my writing is inaccessible. I dismissed a lot of this critique on the basis that I am, at my core, a big idea and theory girl. My way of communicating isn’t supposed to be meant for everyone.

White Saviour Barbie's world of orphanage selfies and charity startups

Name: “White Saviour Barbie”.

Age: 20.

Appearance: The very model of western millennial egalitarianism.

Is that a compliment? No, definitely not. “Barbie Savior” is an Instagram account that satirises the messiah complex of affluent westerners who spend time travelling in the developing world.

I’m nothing like that. Really? But didn’t you once spend an afternoon helping out in a rural Guatemalan orphanage during your gap year?

I didn't get any bites on this when I posted in it's own thread, possibly because it IS offensive and it is meant to poke certain people in the eye. But why pick on the young and idealistic? I say the older leaders of big money charities are often worse than the White Saviour Barbies (I'm looking at you, Mother Theresa...)

Once anyone starts telling an oppressed group what they need, especially when they are not a member of that group and much wealthier by mere accident of birth and opportunity, well then, they've fucked up. They are an ass.

The only real "help" you can provide to an oppressed group, one not your own, is to ask them what they need. If you can't quietly provide that, or if you simply don't think it's a good idea, than get the hell out of the way. You've just become a burden and a waste of resources in the community you meant so nobly to "save."

Oh yeah, the "give a man a fish, teach a man to fish" thing is bullshit too. That's what those guys who kill elephants and sell their ivory to Asia are doing, that's what those guys who are cutting down endangered trees in protected forests are doing. Give a man some wood and he'll build a house. Give a man a chainsaw and he'll cut up an elephant or an endangered species of tree.

The "golden rule" is stupid and oppressive too. It's a mere guideline for getting along in one's own society, where other people are likely to have the same goals and aspirations you do, but it often breaks down entirely between human cultures. NO! I do not want a hug, nor do I want to shake your hand. And the biggest one, NO! Your religious beliefs are offensive to me! You followers of --insert your favorite theology or ideology here-- are obnoxious!
