Arkansas Gentleman In Jail Just For Loving Bible Too Much, Threatening To Kill Seven Mayors

Arkansas Gentleman In Jail Just For Loving Bible Too Much, Threatening To Kill Seven Mayors

Guys with beards this epic are either brilliant or fucking nuts

An Arkansas man who threatened to hang seven mayors if they didn’t replace the Common Core curriculum with Bible-based education is headed back to jail. U.S. Magistrate Judge Caroline Craven had originally released Maverick Dean Bryan after a March 28 hearing, but U.S. District Judge Susan Hickey was persuaded by Assistant U.S. Attorney David Harris that Bryan poses a threat to the public. Seems like a pretty good call to us.

Dean had sent letters to the mayors of Ashdown, Hope, De Queen, Lewisville, Nashville, Prescott and Murfreesboro, in which he threatened to hang them from “mighty oaks” on the lawns of local courthouses if they failed to eliminate Common Core and begin teaching religion in the classroom, exactly like America is supposed to work. The Texarkana Gazette reports that at his original detention hearing in March, Bryan also admitted…to being the author of an advertisement that ran twice in the Thrifty Nickel last year seeking a $23 million loan to raise a Christian army to overthrow the U.S. government.

That’s one of the problems faced by your inexperienced domestic terrorists: They simply don’t understand the intricacies of modern fundraising and go to the Thrifty Nickel or Craigslist to seek support.

In addition, the letters to the mayors demanded that the mayors no longer honor the votes of anyone who is homosexual, Muslim, socialist, communist, atheist, or who worships any God other than Jesus Christ, and that anyone fitting those definitions be required to “exit.”

. . . .

A generalized statement to be sure, with exceptions as all such, but Rudolph and Nicholls and Salvi and Roeder are memorable because they are exceptions. We surely have mobs of violent Christian extremists but at the most so far they assault and threaten in the US at least. The faceless theocratic mobs in Bangladesh kill. ISIS jihadis kill. Hamas jihadis kill, themselves included. We remember few Islamic Rudolphs because there are too many to remember.

I'm surely glad that the Christian loons stick with threats to kill rather than following through for the most part, but it's clear that either they don't really believe as strongly as do their brothers from another prophet, or are less willing to take the heat for acting on those beliefs, either in prison or in the far more instantaneous heat of a suicide vest. Claims that the religion itself is inherently more peaceful certainly don't seem to be borne out by this chap and a depressingly high number of his coreligionists who scream the same garbage at the slightest provocation, or none.

Given we're talking a couple billion people in either case I am not sure there is much need to spend a lot of time fretting over whether 0.0X% of Christians are wannabe killers for God and 0.0Y% of Muslims are. Both numbers are going to be way too high for comfort in absolute terms and at the same time both a small minority of the overall faith group (frankly there is more meat in the question of how many explicitly or implicitly support these extremists even while being unwilling to act. From UK mosques fundraising for ISIS to the people who shelered Rudolph for years). But I am genuinely curious on what it is that gives more Muslim loons the courage of their sick and twisted convictions. It isn't even just hopeless poverty and desperation. ISIS is recruiting European engineers aplenty, and the 9/11 hijackers were not plucked from the gutters of Riyadh but from its well to do. I think we can dispense with the 72 virgins/sultanas as bait because if anything the Christian heaven as described is even more appealing for martyrs, assuming God has managed to work around the Stefan Boltzmann 4th Power Law which should make it, literally, hotter than hell. God after all should have no trouble doing this - it's not an iron chariot or anything. So why do, even financially comfortable, Islamic killers-for-gawd actually kill a bunch of people, while most Christian counterparts are full of sound and fury signifying not much like this guy?

It's easier to get people to do those things if they have nothing to really live for. That's my theory anyway.
