Regular Rural Carrier here. For most of the nation (I assume there are some areas unable to take part) this Saturday you literally just have to leave a bag of nonperishable food by your mail box (or where it is collected) and your mail carrier will pick it up and bring it back to the office where it will be donated to LOCAL food shelters. We are not paid extra for this day and the volunteers (from the food pantries) do it for free that day. It is a long day for me, but well worth it. I drive my own vehicle for my route, and I'm begging y'all to FILL IT UP. I want to be on my phone telling management they better get someone out to offload my SUV! The people in the area i serve have always been so generous, they don't stop at filling a bag up. I GET BOXES filled with food next to the mailbox.
It is such an easy concept I wish we could do it at least twice a year. I go by "your" house every day anyway and service the very people these donations will be providing for. It is various organizations that get the food, depends on your area and who helps feed the hungry. I've actually been collecting much food this entire week as I have businesses that will be closed saturday, but they are awesome and wanted to contribute.

(1,587 posts)As bad off as we are, we try to donate as much as possible because there are people a lot worse off than us. At least we can count on eating every day, even if it sometimes gets boring or the meat has to be stretched more than we like.

(344 posts)the usual postcard notifying me about it so I asked at the PO yesterday. It seems later this year than past years--I thought it should have been last weekend.
