This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by etherealtruth (a host of the General Discussion forum).
Someone actually suggested that the whole Trump candidacy was drummed up by the Clintons in order to assure a Hillary victory, making him the scary boogyman people would fear to vote for.
Then that person finished with "stranger things have happened in American politics".
I just started this topic to learn about those stranger things.
Anyone have some?
For me, that's the most absurd notion, though given the cartoonish nature of this election season, the thought doesn't completely dismiss itself in my mind.
So, have you seen or learned about stranger things than that?

(114,904 posts)Like Bernie is as bad as Henry Kissinger and should be in jail.
Please tell me a low post count troll said that and not a veteran DU'er.
What absolute ignorant horse shit.

(71 posts)Full disclosure here. I am a Bernie supporter but I don't buy it. I can't imagine Trump doing anything for anyone except himself. My theory is that if Trump wins, he will step down.....so his VP pick will be very interesting. I don't really think he wants the presidency, he just wants the press and the attention.

(17,301 posts)The guy was a bad actor who was a former Dem. He talked on and on about his star wars missiles that he got the nick name Raygun.
It wasn't until he committed treason and made a deal with the Iran terrorists to keep the hostages locked up longer, that he started making headway against Carter.
Then there is Ross Peroit. No one took him seriosly at first. Turned out he was right. But there is no scenario where Trump is right. The guy is dumber than W and Raygun combined. So since he is a bafoon, he is perfect for the RepubliCONS.

(26,219 posts)I was surprised on Mother's Day to hear an older relative try to convince me that Bill and Trump cooked this up in a phone call in the weeks leading up to Trump's announcement. This person is an R, and HATES politics, so I'm not sure where they saw or heard this (or if they came up with it on their own), but it is definitely out there.

(2,388 posts)I believe it was for one of the late night talk shows (can't remember which...Kimmel?).
He basically told people they were so stupid to believe his schtick. That video was the
only thing out of his mouth that was remotely believable.
So I find the whole thing entirely within the realm of possibility.
He's all about theatre and can easily play the role of antagonist like he does with his
wrestling buddies. That's exactly the role he's played and does it well.

(14,255 posts)I don't know why, as a Bernie supporter - due to the issues (imagine that!) - it would matter, one way or the other to me or anyone else. There is the feeling that the Clintons have spent the last eight years trying to nail down every little speck of possible opposition, ahead of time. So nothing would be a surprise.
Doesn't look like Hillary could count on beating Trump right now, and if something like this actually was true, the GOP would just hastily shove a more reasonable-sounding pasty white guy out there. Kasich, Jebbie, Mitt, a complete surprise. Who would beat Hillary handily. Anything could happen at the GOP convention. I am sure they have several candidates waiting in the wings.
And - neither party really gives a rat's ass about "the peoples' choice", if that choice is not what was wanted in the first place.

(2,518 posts)But I don't think it was the Clintons' idea, I think it was Trump's idea. It wasn't necessarily "a deal," it was more like a way for The Donald to pass some time, have some fun, and ensure a future stay in the Lincoln Bedroom.
Look, we know, because we have photographic proof, that the Clintons were at the Trumps' wedding, and that Bill has played golf with The Donald. What we probably don't know about is the Bohemian Grove-like romps that Bill and The Donald have shared. In many ways, those two guys are like birds of a feather. I believe that Bill Clinton is one of the few people that Trump has real, honest-to-god respect for. In The Donald's mind, most people are losers, and I think that Bill Clinton is one of the few who is not. I think Trump is probably heartily amused at the thought of his pal being the First Gentleman.
We also know that Trump was not expecting to be so clearly the front-runner. His was meant to be a protest candidacy, he expected to come in second with about 20 percent of the vote. His candidacy was simply meant to throw a monkey wrench in the works, to help strengthen Mrs. Clinton against her eventual establishment opponent. (Jeb!) Instead, he ended up destroying ALL of his opponents.
I think that was because Trump underestimated the zeitgeist. He was the only one on the right who understood it, but he underestimated it. And he's been trying to sabotage his own campaign for a while now, but the harder he tries, the stronger he gets. The man really does NOT want to be president, he was just having some fun.
PREDICTION:
Bookmark this, because you heard it here first!
This year's October Surprise will come in the form of a Donald Trump medical emergency. He will either have a heart attack, or some kind of accident. It will happen after he secures the nomination. He won't die from it, but it will be something that will ensure that he can't be elected in November.
Having a heart attack while schtupping his supermodel wife is the likeliest. This allows him to save face, show his "virility" yet make sure that he is incapacitated, but with a clear road to recovery. It might be an "accident," like on his campaign bus, but this might also hurt other people. Actually, if it did hurt other people, that would provide good cover for him. But a heart attack is more likely. That would be a bit more private, and allow for some great "Melania with tears in her eyes" photo ops.
And to answer your question about other strange happenings in politics?
I've got 3 words for you:
