(I should say "Potentially Airworthy" as I don't think they have an airworthiness certificate yet.)

(40,416 posts)Especially those WWII battle wagons. The B-17, B-24, B-29. Then, the fucking awesome Spitfire, one of the most beautiful airplanes ever.
That beautiful wing!
And don't get me started about the later P-51 Mustang!
Jets? Who needs jets!

I've got aircrew wings on my old Navy hat...
Yesterday I read a dedication in a Veteran's park to the all black squadron, named Tuskegee Airmen, who flew the P-51 Mustang. Serving during most of WWII, while the squadron suffered regular causalities, they never lost a bomber to German Fighters. Red-tails on the aircraft were their insignia.

(36,407 posts)I was working at Ghirardelli Square, ground zero for San Francisco's fleet week air show. I was thirty feet up in the air on scaffolding inside a skylight when them suckers just appeared out of nowhere and scared the shit out of me. They never told me about the Wednesday practice before the weekend show. I was so seriously rattled, I could have fallen.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,365 posts)that hosted an airshow where the Blue Angels performed, and back then they were flying A-4F Skyhawks like this one;
What I found interesting is that on Tuesday before the show weekend, an A4 in plain Navy livery showed up, like this one;
ostensibly to fly the pattern and show box before the Angels themselves showed up. I worked in the parts room of the FBO and the first I was aware of the aircraft showing up was a low pass he did down the length of the runway that was about 200 yards from where I was sitting!.
"WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!?"...Is all I remember thinking as I ran outside to see this jet making a hard bank to begin his downwind leg to prepare for final. It was VERY cool, and I was fortunate enough to have been near where he parked. The next day they all showed up and practiced on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Every demonstration squadron, regardless of country or armed service, are populated by extraordinary individuals. Their skills should not be underestimated, as they are as far from the common pilot of a single engined Cessna as a Formula 1 driver is from a go-kart racer.
