In regards to the NC bathroom law, was it really necessary? I had heard nothing of this "problem" until just a few weeks ago. Where were these transgender folks using the bathrooms before then?
I had heard no complaints or heard anything about it.
Why, then, did President Obama get involved in this debate? Was it necessary? Was it wise, in that it mostly gave the right-wing something to get all fired up about, at the detriment of the Democratic Party, in an election year?
There are those that say, election year or not, there is never a wrong time to do the right thing. But, if it helps the Republicans stay in power or win the election, does that make it the right thing to do?

(28,394 posts)We are probably in the minority here, but I think Obama could have handed this off to the Secretary of Education. You're right.... now the wingnuts have an issue to get their poorly-educated base all riled up and come out to vote. This is the "gay marriage" wedge issue all over again.
We have seen this hair-on-fire scenario over and over and now the democrats have handed it to them on a silver platter. It is almost the end of the school year. This could have waited until after the general election, IMO.

(1,975 posts)I can't speak for everyone. There are transgendered in my family. They don't even know where this bathroom issue came from. Gay marriage is an obvious problem, but using the bathroom? It would be like if people knew if I stood or sat when going pee as a man. From their POV this is a manufactured problem by the right and was only brought up to get the right stirred up prior to Nov.

(14,732 posts)He already have DOJ suing North Carolina over this whole deal. A judgment in favor of the DOJ would have pretty much resolved this nationwide, although the DOJ would still have to fight some rearguard actions from Texas and some of the other deep southern states. This unexpected and, to my way of thinking unnecessary action, particularly at this time does nothing more than give the Rethugs their golden wedge issue to beat to death in order to mobilize the troops and elect Trump. If you didn't listen to Texas' goober Lt. Governor last night you should have. He flat out stated that they intend to make this the #1 Repubican voter issue in this election - "DO YOU WANT YOUR 14 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER TO SHOWER WITH BOYS???"
