Michael Moore's "Where to Invade Next?" makes me very angry

at how much the GOP/conservatism/corporatism/greed/racism/religious nuts/American exceptionalism/American stupidity have fucked us up as a nation.

Other parts made me cry at what we have lost.

Really, everyone interested in politics should see this movie, to see what is possible-- and I hope where we can take this nation and this world.

At Wallyworld. Now before you rip up my ass for setting foot there, I have to tell you I do not have a choice, because I live in the country, about many things. In fact I have to drive 20 miles just to GET to Wallyworld to buy groceries. If I want to go to Whole Paycheck, or Swapper Jack's (where Homer Simpson shops) it's 140 miles which is not practical.

We went in the CD/DVD department, asked about it, and the boy was clueless. I looked the "NEW" shelf over thoroughly and couldn't find it. Hubby was asking over in front of another shelf that was less prominently marked "NEW".

I went over that rack carefully examining it and finally found it on the bottom shelf. Right by the floor. The cover has no bright colors and just an American flag and a picture of Michael Moore in an olive drab jacket, so it's easy to miss. They had it but sure weren't promoting it.

Surprise.

There is a lot of Democratic complicity in why those countries can have those things and we do not.

I won't talk about the details because I don't want to be a spoiler, but one thing that the Democrats are as much to blame for, if not more, than the repubs is the failure to prosecute the banking and Wall Street crooks who nearly cratered our economy.

Too many Democrats say "no we can't do that, they wont let us" instead of "yes, we are going to do that, let the bastards try to stop us!"

Everyone should see it.

Moore is doing a fundraiser for MoveOn.org If you donate $27 he'll send you a DVD of "Where to Invade Next". Would make a great thing to show at a political fundraiser party or just to watch, and weep. And cheer.

Love the last segment, where older women, I think from Finland, look into the camera and tell the audience how they "wouldn't want to be our neighbor"—here in America. Because we seem to not care for each other or to help each other out. As a shared cultural understanding.

especially in the part near the end of the movie where he talks about how social progress always takes a while in this country, but by persevering we make change. I agree with that outlook.

It is incredible to see the differences between our work-til-you-drop-all-hail-the-uberlords system and the benevolent societies in Italy, Denmark, et al. Those benefits were hard won, and it's going to take a lot of work here before we have anything like a fair society.

It's right to be pissed off at the raw deal the average citizen gets here in the "greatest country in the world," but we have to be cheerful warriors who fight for a better deal for ourselves and future generations.

It pulls together so many threads examining life in other countries that you've heard about here and there over the years. I loved the segment about school lunches in France. I remember Anthony Bourdain featured that aspect of French culture a while back on his CNN show, and it was mind-blowing to be reminded of how pathetic our nutritional standards for students are so abysmal. Remember when the Reagan admin declared ketchup a vegetable? Ugh.

WTIN played for weeks and weeks here in the Santa Cruz area and the run only ended when the DVD was released this week. Saw it then and have just gotten the DVD through Netflix to watch again.

Michael Moore is such a huge voice for progressive ideas... hope he keeps up the great work for many years to come.

I am retiring in about a year.
I met a woman from the Netherlands a few years ago, and we hit it off real well. So well, that I am going to retire there.
Yes, I have some stuff to straighten out with my passport, but luckily I have a decent retirement, so I will finally get married, and "settle down." At like 63!
I have been to the Netherlands twice already, and find that things are so much better there than they are here.
Well, Amsterdam and Rotterdam and other big cities are expensive, but in the middle, where she lives, Wageningen, is quite nice, and costs are about what we pay here. Yes gas is more expensive, but health insurance costs about 1/5 what it costs here, and there is no co-pay (except if you have to stay at the hospital), many drugs are included in your insurance. They also have a great public transportation system, and people bike everywhere. The country is as flat as a pancake. 90% of the folks speak English, but Dutch is not too hard. It is something in between English and German.
There are much more reasonable cultural things to do there. For instance, there is a thing called a "Museumcart" or Museum card, which you pay 50 euros a year for, and you can get into most of the museums there. There are many. Art, history, and others. And they are mostly within an hour's train ride away, if not less. They say that they like to have this, because it encourages people to go to the museums, even if it's just to see a limited engagement exhibit on their lunch hour.
Most of the stores are in the city center, which is about a 15 minute walk from the house. On Wednesdays and Saturdays they have a market in the city center where they sell food, clothing, and all sorts of other things.
Internet access is cheap and fast. 30-40 euros a month for cable tv and 100-200MBps internet! I think for another 10 or 20 euros you can get cellphone service too. And there is wi-fi on the trains and buses too.
So it was sort of a miracle, when I met Inge. I met a woman who I finally know wants to be my partner in life, and she lives in a great little country.

PS- There's a "twilight zone" thing going on here too. I live on the only road named Creek Locks Road on the planet. It is on the old Delaware and Hudson Canal, near Kingston, NY. The first settlers here in the 1660s were the Van Wagens, who were from Wageningen. I nearly flipped out when I stumbled across this bit of history. There is a great Dutch influence here in NY's first Capital, Kingston, and a lot of history, all over Ulster County. It is very strange that I am going back to where the first settlers here were from though.

What they don't say is that the US has a lot more money than these countries. We could easily implement all of these changes to Anerican Life and then some.

It's a great American tragedy that we are choosing to make 99% of the population live this miserable existence. And it's all happening so the richest few hundred thousand can live like royalty.
