Yellowstone tourists put bison calf in back of car because they were worried that it was cold

Tourists visiting the famous Yellowstone National Park have been criticised for reportedly putting a bison calf into the back of their car because they thought it was cold.

A photo of the incident was shared on Facebook by visitor Karen Olsen Richardson who explained it was taken on a recent trip to the 2.2 million acre park in the mountain region of Wyoming.

The highlight of the trip,” she wrote. “Dear tourists: the bison calf is not cold and it is not lost. Put it back! (yes, the park rangers took care of the situation).”

Weston Olsen added: “Haha! My sister was in Yellowstone and caught some idiots doing this.”

She told the East Idaho News the tourists lifted the bison calf into the back of their SUV because they thought it was cold.

Richardson says on Monday, as students were being taught at Lamar Buffalo Ranch, a father and son pulled up at the ranger station with a bison calf in their SUV.

“They were demanding to speak with a ranger,” Richardson tells EastIdahoNews.com. “They were seriously worried that the calf was freezing and dying.”

Rob Heusevelet, a father of a student, told the men to remove the bison from their car and warned they could be in trouble for having the animal.

“They didn’t care,” Heusevelet says. “They sincerely thought they were doing a service and helping that calf by trying to save it from the cold.”

Law enforcement rangers were called and the father-and-son tourists, who were from another country, were ticketed.

Heusevelet says the rangers followed the pair back to where they had picked up the bison, and the animal was released.

I was out on open prairie in Nebraska* and 100 yards was more then close
enough for me to see bison in the wild.

It's not as if they were trying to steal the calf and take it home.

If I were the ranger I might have let them off with a warning (and an explanation), instead of issuing a ticket.

OK, I admit, I'm a softie when it comes to good motives.

The calf had to be put down because it was repeatedly rejected by the herd when they tried to reunite them. I'd take your slack back.

or had it already been rejected by the time these people picked it up? I can't imagine these people could have easily driven off with a small calf that was currently integrated in the herd.

would probably not be an easy thing to do in the middle of a herd with mama watching. It would make more sense if the calf was already on it's own (whether it wandered off or was already rejected, I couldn't say).

Nature won't miss us. EDIT: These people meant well but most of us live lives so disconnected from the natural world that we can't always know what's best for a wild animal. Also, some folks just aren't that smart.

This incident somehow reminded me of a co-worker, a nice middle-aged lady who I saw dosing a potted Prickly Pear cactus with a lot of water. (The cactus belonged to our boss.) I said something about all the water but don't recall exactly what I said. I DO recall exactly what SHE said: "It's from the desert so it needs a lot of water."
