DANBURY - Aimee Toms was washing her hands in the womens bathroom at Walmart in Danbury Friday when a stranger approached her and said, Youre disgusting! and You dont belong here!
After momentary confusion, she realized that the woman next to her thought - because of her pixie-style haircut and baseball cap - that she was transgender.
Toms believes the incident happened because of the national controversy sparked by a law that was passed in North Carolina attempting to force transgender people to use the bathroom of the gender they were identified as at birth. Since then, religious conservatives have launched a boycott of Walmart competitor Target, which has said transgender people are welcome to use its bathrooms freely. Nationally, Walmart has been silent on the issue.

No one has ever questioned me in a bathroom, and I live in NC.
I'm suspicious of all these sudden stories.

I lived in NC until the late 60s and thought it was pretty gay friendly, at least to the point that the cops didn't show up in gay bars to harass men who they thought looked feminine or women they thought looked unfeminine. In fact, I never saw it anywhere.
Shoot, I've happily shared the ladies' with drag queens. Not only was the floor show great, I knew they'd get beaten to a pulp in the gents'.

I've not been to a gay bar in forever, but I'm sure it's the same.
Not so sure that they'd get beaten to a pulp though. One time at an old gay bar in Charlotte, a bunch of rednecks came by on a summer night when many of us were outside for whatever reason. They shouted the usual names.
The second time they drove by, one of the drag queens pulled a handgun from her purse and gave chase. You should have seen the rednecks take off; I've never forgotten it. We laughed ourselves silly.
