To RECOMMEND or to COMMENT? What motivates you, either way?

Many a rather pedestrian DU post gets much attention, while others arre left to the wind. Why is that? And, no, I actually don't care about my own OPs, though it is odd that the more boring ones get more responses.

At an Underground place, shouldn't people be more aware?

I comment if I have something to say, which, as you can see by my post count, is quite often.

Maybe a different or complimentary way of looking at something. Then I will comment.
Recommendations are usually made because I think the thread is important and should be viewed more widely.

it's usually in pets or photography when i do. i don't reply often because i feel like i have nothing to add or that no one gives a shit.

i'll have a popular op from time to time but that doesn't happen much.

And I don't see a great deal of stuff here.

If I have something to say, or if it looks like it could use a kick, I comment.

If I agree but have nothing to add to what has already been said, and it's close to the top, I sometimes just rec.

Sometimes threads don't get a lot of recs because the people who would rec them don't see them. I don't understand why that's confusing.

The Tigers are not doing so well this year, but it gives me something to talk to my dad about regardless. I grew up watching sports with him - mainly the Tigers, the Red Wings, and University of Michigan football. I like sports because of my relationship with my dad more than anything else.

the other <10% are 'support' (intended as congratulation, hug, high-five, whatever). Replies are if I have something useful or relevant to say that hasn't already been said in the thread, or occasionally a joke attempt (nearly always understood by me alone). I read a lot more than I rec, and I rec a lot more than I reply, and I reply a lot more than I o-post...

entertain, or please (through my lens of what those mean). And it can't be bullshit, snark, trollery, or other form of static.

Perhaps a better answer would be this.

(And I guess I was mistaken; I actually do reply more than I rec. I'll have to get to work on that...)
