Mary Lou Bruner, the Texas Republican who believes President Barack Obama once worked as a gay prostitute to support a drug habit, is now invoking Hitler in response to allegations of fear-mongering from her opponent.

Bruner faces Kevin Ellis in a May 24 runoff in the GOP primary for the District 9 seat on the State Board of Education. Ellis is accusing Bruner of fear-mongering for suggesting, among other things, that children who say that abortion is wrong or that global warming is real during school risk being taken away from their parents by Child Protective Services....

“If that is fearmongering, I wish people had spoken out harder and heavier in Germany before Hitler took over,” Bruner said. “We should be scared when they want to take away from us what our government was built upon and totally revamp it and make it like the socialist and communist countries of the world.”...

"If you try to stop federal control of education you might be criticized or you might make mistakes, but at least you can say you did not stand by and watch the terrible thing happen without saying or doing anything to stop the advance of socialism/Communism,” Bruner wrote above the photo.

Some journalist somewhere should listen to what Ms. Bruner says, and ask her some pointed questions about just what she means. Don't take it for granted that she's discussing anything that anyone would recognize as a valid point.

For instance:

What is she talking about when she says she wants to "stop federal control of education"? What does she mean by stopping "the advance of socialism/Communism," and why did she capitalize Communism?

I practically guarantee Bruner would get tied up in her own verbiage to such a degree that nobody who watched her would mistake her for a serious human being, and would be more likely to call the nice chaps in the white coats with butterfly nets.

2. Mary Lou presupposes that being a gay

prostitute is a bad thing. Not everyone would say it was.

If she has evidence of Barack Obama's life in that milieu, she should present it.

If she doesn't, she should shut her slanderous mouth.

There are a lot of different kinds of folks out there, and some of them get by as best they can, or as resourcefully, or as nimbly as possible. And they deserve far better than to be Mary Lou Bruner's default repulsion.
